Buju Banton Releases New Track “Trust”
After a wait of 10 years, Buju Banton fans were treated to a release of his new track last Thursday and what a track it is!
The title of the track is “Trust” and less than a year after his release from prison this is an issue that is obviously still weighing on his mind. In this latest release his collaboration with influential, and notoriously obscure producer Dave Kelly, whom Buju previously worked with on classic hits such as “Bogle” and “Big it up” the two take us back to some classic dancehall vibes of the 90’s while also offering an original style and flow that will capture the vibes and beats of a newer generation of dancehall fans. These two legends of the dancehall/reggae industry have long been friends and worked with each other many times over the last 30 years and we can only hope that they will continue to do so after the release of this amazing new track.
In the track we hear Gargamel deejay about a variety of issues, addressing rumors about him being involved with a friend “Pictures a guh round, seh Simone, a mi wifie” and expressing his paranoia stemming from the speed at which fake news circulates through “so called friends” via phones and online.
As well as singing about fake friends “Them so call friends dem me a tell yuh bout Dem will sell you out, dem will sell you out”.
Also giving warnings to not believe what you hear and not trust what you see on your phone or social media “Me nuh trust phone, me nuh, me nuh trust phone”. This is a message which is poignant for him as he still maintains that he was the victim of entrapment which led to his arrest 10 years ago. He has taken this history and transformed it, with energy and power, into this future dancehall classic while offering a warning to others to be careful not to make the same mistakes he made.
Skillfully firing lyrical word play, Banton alludes to the set up orchestrated by American federal law enforcement resulting in his seven-year incarceration in the United States. Amusingly, he also gives a nod to popular Dancehall artiste Adidja ‘Vybz Kartel’ Palmer, who suffered a similar fate from an incriminating voice note that resulted in a life sentence at the Tower Street Adult Correctional Centre in Kingston, Jamaica.
Of course, the Grammy-award winning deejay had to reference the age-old mistrust between men and women in romantic relationships. A common motif in his Dancehall repertoire, such as “Too Bad” (2006), Banton warns listeners to be vigilant around conniving females with ulterior motives, brimming the comical extreme of advising listeners, “if she go bathroom, mek sure yuh peep”.
The release of the single has been getting rave reviews from across the dancehall music industry and is set to go down as a classic of the genre. So nuh linga nuh more and give it a listen below.
