The ceremony for the Prime Minister’s Youth Award for Excellence was held on Saturday, November 30, in Kingston, and Reggae icon in the making, Koffee, was one of the honorees. Koffee, whose real name is Mikayla Simpson, won the award for excellence in Arts and Culture, and we can’t say that we’re surprised.

Since the start of her career, Koffee has been a trendsetter in the music industry, and overall, an inspiring figure to her peers and even those who came before her.

As she is off the island at this time, her mother, Jo-Anne Williams, who was, without a doubt, beaming with pride, accepted the award on her behalf.

The theme of the ceremony was “The Jamaican Youth are LIT – They Lead, Inspire and Transform Jamaica and our World”. Koffee has been doing just that. High off her recent Grammy nomination for her EP, Rapture which boasts songs such as Toast and the title track, Rapture, she is leading the way for female Reggae artistes going into 2020.

Koffee was included among 87 others who were selected as honorees. Outside of Arts and Culture, the ceremony granted awards for categories such as Youth Development, Leadership, Sports, Academics, and Nation Builder. YouTube and social media personality, Russhaine ‘Dutty’ Berry was one of the winners in the category of Arts and Entertainment.

We can only expect greater things to flow from Koffee’s career as the new year approaches.

She recently released her newest single W, featuring international rapper, Gunna. She also dropped a mind-blowing music video for the single, on Saturday, November 26, which so far has garnered over 2 million views and debuted at number 1 on the Jamaican YouTube trending list. Koffee has also hinted at a musical collaboration with Bajan songstress and fashion mogul, Rihanna, who is set to release a dancehall album.

Since the announcement of both her Grammy nomination and her recent win of a Prime Minister’s Youth Award, tons of Jamaicans online have been celebrating the Throne artiste, online. One fan said, “Go girl … Its just the beginning,” and hundreds of others share the sentiment.

Koffee has cleared most of her posts on her Instagram profile, leaving only two, one of which is a snippet of her new single, W. This move on Koffee’s part only has us wondering what’s next for the talented entertainer.
