Bounty Killer Maintaining His 30 Year ‘Standard’
Rodney Price better known as Bounty Killer has been in the industry for almost 30 years. He made his debut in 1992 and has remained a household name ever since with a string of signature aggressive releases. His latest track uploaded to BountyKillerVEVO on Youtube is called Standard.
Standard has the well-known War Lord true to his cross, angry and miserable tone and had us wondering who upset the Zilla again.
Continuing to listen, it is clear this is a response to songs released by other dancehall artistes this year in efforts to claim the highly coveted Dancehall throne.
This year has seen releases from many veterans and even a couple newcomers who are vying for the title of the King of Dancehall. This release from the Five Star General is an obvious statement of disagreement.
The track begins with Killa declaring – “Man a real General, we nuh Jenifer”
A likely reference to the term Genna being used by the next generation of hot and hype dancehall DJs. Killa is reclaiming the title as the original General in Dancehall and several of his fans agree according to the comment section of the song uploaded on Dec. 9.
Now this is the man who should be arguing about kingship in in dancehall because he (‘s ) contribute a lot, but come to think of it a Gad is bigger than any king
Another commenter wrote – What Dancehall would be without the General? It wouldn’t be as good. Long live Killa!! – Lexx Brown
The chorus of the chune carries on to proclaim – “Real General neva drop my standard, neva drop my guard”. Bounty’s supporters again were eager to second this sentiment, one fan commenting –“Love him or hate him you Have to respect the tripple G for setting up living up and standing up for his principles . cant be bribed bought or sold. G for Great G for Ganster G for General.”
Over his almost 30 year involvement in the Dancehall Industry the twice nominated and Grammy award winning artiste has created quite the legacy. Dubbed the 5 Star General by his adoring audience, Bounty Killer has been consistently mentioned among the greats with a rightful claim to the throne.
At age 14 Rodney got caught in crossfire between warring political parties and was shot in the head. It is said that he decided on his stage name of Bounty Killer while recovering in hospital. He has also since been dubbed the Poor People’s Governer and Ghetto Gladiator and according to his Instagram @grungaadzilla he is still living up to that standard.
