New Albums From Vybz Kartel And Govana Land On Best Selling iTunes Charts
Incarcerated ‘King of the Dancehall’ Vybz Kartel and 4th Genna deejay Govana both released new albums on January 10th, to the delight of anxious fans.
Over the weekend, Kartel’s album To Tanesha peaked at No. 3 on iTunes in the Hip-Hop/Rap category for best selling albums in the US. Govana’s album Human and Monsters Are Not The Same peaked at No.2 in the Reggae category on the Apple owned music store, behind a Bob Marley compilation.

Both artistes are among Dancehall’s most consistent and current hit-makers, though their overall careers are hardly comparable.
Vybz Kartel is a veteran in with the dancehall space. Within his 20 year career, the incarcerated deejay has captivated the hearts and minds of dancehall fans around the world and they have crowned him the “king of dancehall”. His controversial lyrics and perspectives have made his somewhat of a miscreant to Jamaican religious leaders and lawmakers, but Kartel has been revered by dancehall fans for decades. Having spent the majority of the last decade behind bars, he has impressively remained at the top of the dancehall charts each year.
Govana, on the other hand, can hardly be classified as a “newcomer” in dancehall. Formerly known as Deablo, the 4th Genna officiate has been recording music for 10 years. Though many dancehall fans were aware of the deejay’s presence earlier in his career, Govana had not gained much recognition. In 2016, he took on a new stage name “Govana”, and has since ascended to the forefront of dancehall with back-to-back hits.
“Humans And Monsters Are not The Same” is Govana’s debut album. The album has 14 songs, four of which have been released as singles thus far: “The Light” featuring Dre Island, “Cups Up”, “Unanswered” featuring Tarrus Riley, and “Believe Me“, Govana’s current hit.
Vybz Kartel’s latest release, “To Tanesha” shows his dedication and appreciation for his common-law wife and the mother of three of his children, Tanesha Johnson, also known as Shorty. “To Tanesha” has 10 tracks, with several featured artists. Kartel’s two sons Likkle Vybz and Likkle Addi, Sikka Rhymes and Jada Kingdom, among others, are featured on the album.
While Govana’s album is a more conscious effort to get fans into a positive mindset to reflect on society and its social construct, Kartel’s album attempts to show love and appreciation for his wife despite being incarcerated.
Just recently the Worl’ Boss dropped the official music video for the World Government single. The song is a step away from the artiste’s vulnerable side, outlining a utopian society, ran by himself as the head of state.
On the Billboard Reggae Charts, “World on Fire” by Stick Figure has spent 15 weeks at number one. Popcaan’s “Vanquish” mixtape debuted at number two but recently fell to the number three spot below “Sense of Purpose” by Maoli.
