With China at the epicenter of the outbreak of a deadly disease, this has sparked worldwide health outrage across numerous economies, raising fears about the global outlook if the coronavirus worsens and what mechanisms will be instituted by government officials against the disease.

On Monday, January 27, popular dancehall entertainer, Ce’cile whose real name is Cecile Claudine Charlton took to her Twitter account to question whether the Jamaican government has taken robust steps towards ensuring the safety of its citizens.

“With so much going on does anyone know if we started screening for the #coronavirus at our AIRPORTS YET? We cannot afford to “not be proactive” we do know a lot of people go and come from China,” the artiste said.

The authorities have since then reported that at least eighty-one persons have died from the disease with more than 2,700 infected in more than a dozen countries, which includes the United States of America.

The magnitude of the severity of the deadly disease which is said to be transmittable has left a dark gloom over many countries within the Caribbean.

With no reported cases of the virus detected in the region so far, there is great fear that it will find its way in the Caribbean basin.

The extent of its impact has become vivid over the past few days has resulted in public health officials have warned people to be cognizant of the disease and its symptoms.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade has since then been in contacted with a total of eighteen Jamaican nationals who are caught in the global concern in China to ensure their safety and protection.

“We are aware of 18 Jamaicans including students and teachers in the Wuhan area, the epicentre of the outbreak, who are keeping in touch with each other and the Embassy, by way of a WhatsApp group for support and communication purposes,” Johnson-Smith shared.
