Dancehall Artiste Dexta Daps Arrested For Alleged Shootings And Gang-Related Activities

Popular Dancehall Artiste Louis Grandison more popularly known as Dexta Daps, was trending on social media on Wednesday afternoon but not for his usual raunchy and sexy lyrics. A video emerged on social media of the artiste in handcuffs and surrounded by armed members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force and the Jamaica Defence Force.

Grandison is in custody at the Hunt’s Bay Police station. Head of the St. Andrew South Police Division, Senior Superintendent Wayne Cameron disclosed that the artiste was being held in connection with ongoing investigations into shootings and gang activities in the South St. Andrew area.

The South St. Andrew area has been under a State of Emergency (SOE) since January 1, as murders skyrocket in the communities. The Prime Minister Andrew Holness in declaring the SOE noted that the main cause of death in the area is “gangs, dons and guns,” as it recorded 94 murders in 2019.

The video of Grandison is purportedly said to be taken of the artiste in Seaview Gardens, a West Kingston community where he lives. In the video, Daps is seen wearing a white Merino and Dockers shorts. Onlookers crowded to get a look of the artiste even as government of Jamaica officials urge citizens to practice social distancing and to stay at home in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Daps known for popular songs like Leader and No Underwear, is seen led by police and soldiers as the crowd chants “we want Dexta,” in protest of his arrest.
