Former Dutty Cup Crew Member Mr. Chicken Dies At 47 After Suffering A Stroke

In some sad and shocking news, Dancehall deejay Mr. Chicken, most famously known when he was a member of Sean Paul’s Dutty Cup Crew, died yesterday (Monday April 27th) at the age 47.

He is also known for his 1998 radio hit song, ‘Speak Up’.

Mr. Chicken, whose real name was Henry Dyer, died one week after he suffered a stroke at the Burlington Business Complex in Half-Way Tree, which he managed. He was associated with several big names in Dancehall in the 90s including Uncle Mucks (formerly Kid Kurup), Mossy Kid, Looga Man, Daddigon, and Froggy.

Following the breakup of Dutty Cup, Mr. Chicken pursued a solo career starting in 2006. This was after he left the Disco Renaissance. He’s quoted in a Jamaica Star interview in 2018 explaining how he got his stage name.

“They used to call me by my right name, Henry. But all I eat is chicken. I used to work around Renaissance, and every day we going to lunch, my friend would say, ‘chicken him ah guh want’”, he said.

Popular producer and owner of Burlington Business Complex, producer Q45, expressed his shock at the passing of his friend to Loop Jamaica. He also revealed that they were working on new music.

“I have known Chicken for over 20 years and we worked closely for the past four years. We were even working on some new music”, he said.

Mr Chicken is featured on Q45’s Buss Box rhythm which was released last month. The track is called Hide N Dweet. Mr Chicken also recently released a mixtape called From Den Till Now which is a collection of his work from his Dutty Cup crew days into this year. According to the producer Mr. Chicken had a history of high blood pressure.

“Anyone from Dutty Cup Crew is, without question, automatically family. We did not necessarily speak every day, but that’s my brother … I love Chicken. So when I heard of his situation I was beside myself – in a state of dismay, disoriented – I was praying for his speedy recovery to get out the hospital fast and come back 100 percent. But now I have to come to terms that he is gone,” he said.

It was also reported that some of the members were saddened to hear about his passing. Steve ‘Urchin’ Wilson said, “all of us, Sean, Farenheit, myself and the Dutty Cup Crew are grieving, and we really want to just send our condolences to the family at this moment.”

Kid Kurup (now Uncle Mucks), said: “He was a really good friend for over a decade and it makes me sad to know he is gone, especially during this time. He is always happy and makes sure everyone around him is happy. Chicken’s death comes as a shock to all of us. I have to big up Sean Paul for his continuous support for Chicken and his family through this time and my prayers go out to them as well,” he said.

The son of Renaissance Disco CEO DJ Delano, added: “Chicken is like an uncle; I can’t say we communicated in recent times, but he is family (so) I feel deeply, knowing he had to go through this. He was always taking care of people around him. In fact, he was the person that picked me up from school as a child and ensured I was fed with whatever junk food I wanted. I am sure I speak for all of us at Renaissance when I say prayers for his family throughout this time will not stop.”
