Popcaan Stuns Fans By Cutting Off His Hair

One month after he disappeared from Instagram, the Unruly Boss is back, but without his crowning glory, bald as a cricket ball.

Popcaan has shaved off his signature hair which was often styled to resemble pieces of “popcorn”.  The move, which has caused tongues to be wagging about his new image, has also left many of his female fans in disbelief.

The Raving artiste, who hails from St. Thomas, posted three full-length photos of himself earier today on his IG page, clad in monochromatic black, with his hair closely cropped, which he captioned “RAPID eh UP!!!”.

However, due to the angle from which the photo was taken and the distance, it was not immediately clear to fans whether he had actually made the clean cut.

Some female fans openly expressed their displeasure that he had shorn his mane, while some said the photos appear to be part of a prank, and asked for a close-up shot of his head. Others said they were sure he had slicked back his hair in a ponytail and demanded that he pull it out or upload a photo of a side view of his head.

Some fellow entertainers were in equal disbelief.  Shenseea commented, “Buh” on the post which attracted over 10,000 comments in 5 hours, while Protoje questioned, “What’s happening here??”.

Popcaan’s sister Unruly Squid and dancehall artiste Jada Kingdom agreed that the new look was “sharp” and “dappa”,  while his protégé Quada said, “Judah papa skull”.

Some fans though, appeared ambivalent about the new haircut opting to tell the Vanquish artiste, who had taken a break from Instagram since April 12, that they missed him as he had been offline for some time now much to their dismay after feuding with former friend and producer NotNice last month.  Others claimed that he looked like a little schoolboy, while some wanted to know whether he had lost a bet and had to cut his hair as a result.

“Coronavirus just cutting everything for real, restaurant dining, hotel sector, jobs, party and other social gatherings. I mean Popcaan hair and all gone,” one fan said, while a male fan quipped: “quarantine is really getting to our heads.”

But the 31 year old seems to be enjoying the jokes being made at his expense, as three hours later he posted two memes, one comparing him to Lil Bill and the other made by a fan of an unpopped popcorn kernel to which he compared Popcaan’s new hairstyle, and another of the artiste sporting a Central African Republic hairstyle which he compared to a popped grain of corn.

The Good Times singer has been sporting his signature long hair ever since he burst onto the dancehall scene as a part of Vybz Kartel’s Gaza camp.

The artiste, whose given name is Andrae Sutherland, has the distinction of being dancehall’s wealthiest son under 35 years old. Over the years, his hairstyles have ranged from fat plaits to afros, snails eye, corn rows, braids, twists, vertical cornrows and ponytails among others.
