The dancehall fraternity in Trinidad and Tobago has been thrown into mourning following the death of an up and rising star in the industry named K-Lion.

K-Lion, whose real name is Kwinton Thomas, died suddenly yesterday June 10, of an apparent seizure that led to a heart attack in Miami.  The artiste reportedly died while playing football.

At just 26-years-old, Thomas had already commanded respect in T&T’s local dancehall scene and was part of a new generation of music which is known as ‘Trinibad’.  Lion was also considered one of the leaders in the newly emerging arch of dancehall on the island called Zesser Music.

In the short time that he began contributing to genre, having his breakthrough sometime in 2018, he amassed an impressive following online. K-Lion had close to 54,000 subscribers on YouTube. His most popular song Malandros has over 3.8 million views on YouTube.

His other popular songs included Private Zess and Rise Up.

The singer was one of a few artistes selected for this year’s Soca Monarch as the organizers tried to incorporate more local music.

Fans of his music expressed their shock at his passing on Twitter. One said: “People that die young always shake me. This is sad too because he really had that star quality, very talented. I saw him achieving big things for sure in the future. May his soul rest peacefully.”
