Buju Banton Drops Lyric Video For ‘Blessed’ Ahead Of Upcoming Album
Buju Banton has dropped a scorcher off his upcoming album, Upside Down 2020 , called Blessed.
The deejay showed through this production that he will be sticking to his well-known style of dancehall. A style that made him one of the greatest dancehall artistes in the nineties and helped sustain his three-decade-long career.
Buju is also known for fusing uplifting lyrics with classic dancehall beats, and this one is no exception. The lyric video was uploaded to YouTube yesterday, June 11th.
He opens with: “We ago mek it, mek it, win the prize and tek it, tek it, we ago mek it, mek it, four corner, global.”
By the opening, it’s clear that he’s sending a message to the more impoverished fans who are systemically held down to hold strong because success will come. It’s a message that maybe even more needed now as the world continues to protest the loss of George Floyd at the hands of police in Minneapolis on May 25th. It may be the reason he chose to drop this song ahead of the album.
As the song progresses, the beat gets faster, and Buju drops some bars as he shows the world that this album is going to be a chart-topper.
At one point, he sings: “Them a scheme and a dream and wish wi fi dead but a God have wi head and a just now we a scream and a cheer fi di team, them a plan how fi bench we and them rule supreme.”
The track is a throwback to when the bass of a riddim was the most important feature, but it also has a very polished sound that shows Buju is ready to once again dominate the dancehall world.
The potent message that he’s sending is not lost with the powerful beat featured on the track.
“Tell them seh we bless, tell them we bless, tell them we bless, tell them we bless, tell them we bless, tell them we bless, tell them we bless, tell them seh we still have life wi nuh stress, God light shine on we on our quest,” he sings in the chorus as he encourages fans around the world to keep their head up and never forget that they are blessed.
Fans immediately reacted and threw their support behind the track, like this fan who said: “It’s 3am, and I’m dancing go Buju. Rule ya jungle!!!”
One thing is for sure Buju Banton has definitely raised the anticipation level for the upcoming album having shown what it may potentially sound like.
