Ishawna’s Reggae Sumfest Performance Sends Fans Crazy
Dancehall artiste Ishawna returned to the Sumfest stage, after four years, this time for her very first virtual performance on night one of this year’s A Taste Of Reggae Sumfest yesterday.
Her outfit, a black sequined bodysuit complete with shorts and a connected half front blazer style jacket with her back out, was complemented by a long pink wig, stiletto boots, and her sexy body to make for a fine performance that left her fans calling for a virtual encore! Watch her performance below.
The ultimate stage performer, she never leaves a stage without tongues wagging. The Equal Rights singer in a sultry performance belt out several of her hits, including Restraining Order , Cheerful Giver , Slippery When Wet , Everybody Needs Love , and Want It.
Known for her provocative fashion style and lyrics, Ishawna’s 10-minute set ended with her most outrageous song, Equal Rights. Displaying her wining skills to the urgings of the DJ, Ishy said, “mi supposed to liff up mi clothes, because mi skin is very clean, yea.”
She dedicated Equal Rights “to the clean girl dem.” The lyrics of the song that glorifies reception of oral sex by men on women switches the tables on men like Vybz Kartel, who have been able to sing about receiving oral sex in Dancehall for many years but have denounced reciprocation.
Ishawna though, has been the oral sex advocate for women. She prefaced her performance by saying that she couldn’t believe it was 2020, and the world was going to end, and some men still don’t want to reciprocate, drawing reference to the pandemic that has left the future uncertain for many.
“How some man deh with some oman and the woman just brups and leff them, unu want to know why the woman left them, cause unnu eat &^% like this,” She proceeded to demonstrate the most boring technique and declared “that nah guh work,” before continuing her performance.

Of course, Ishawna’s advocacy might not be wholly receptive by everyone since Jamaica still has very conservative views when it comes to oral sex.
On Twitter, however, the norms seem to be changing, @shharine called the song “a feminist anthem.”

Another commented, “all now I still don’t understand why some bwoy were so offended and disgusted by Ishawna’s Equal Rights song… acting like seh dem neva nyam front before.”

Referring to her constant barrage of songs that have drawn public ridicule for challenging norms, another fan commented, “say what you want, Ishawna is the original bad gyal and hot gyal fi dancehall. Barefaced, controversial and her song them never fail. That nuh change and WILL NEVER change and tonight she prove it once again. #Sumfest.”

A crowd favorite, Ishawna was left out of the 2019 staging of the event owned by Joe Bogdanovich, who is also the CEO of Downsound Records that owns the festival franchise.
Ishawna made her Reggae Sumfest debut on Dancehall Night at the Catherine Hall Entertainment Centre in Montego Bay in 2015. Since she has delivered a string of hits known for courting public controversy in her music.
Earlier in the year, long before lockdown measures caused by the coronavirus, Ishawna was the first dancehall artiste to move her raunchy Instagram content to the popular adult entertainment platform OnlyFans. The Mi Horny singer has been quiet for much of the year so far, but we’re not surprised as she did vow at the end of 2019 to move in silence in 2020 due to being disappointed by people she thought was there for her during that year.
