Buju Banton Performs ‘The World Is Changing’ On The Tonight Show
Veteran dancehall deejay Buju Banton has been having quite a remarkable year. From the release of his successful album Upside Down 2020 to his 25-year celebration of‘ Til Shiloh’ which was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America, Banton, whose real name is Mark Myrie, has been flying the flag of dancehall high, even with the world being mostly locked down due to the coronavirus pandemic.
A notable result of his hard work and dedication to his craft has been the curiosity that he is stoking in American markets. His latest accomplishment was appearing on the largely syndicated The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.
He certainly has been drumming up interest in the US where he served ten years in prison on drug charges, as he was also featured recently on Trevor Noah’s The Daily Show.
Last night, August 18, Banton performed The World is Changing from his latest offering Upside Down 2020 as he appeared as Fallon’s musical guest.
His selection of the track was superb in that the song has a more melodic beat, easier for American fans and newbies to understand, with a very strong anti-political message, which probably sums up how Buju feels about current events. The song directly attacks those in positions of authority manipulating things like the marijuana industry to gain profits. Marijuana is considered a sacred herb to Rastafarians. He croons: “ Everyone’s eyes are open, they can see clear,” as he delivers an energetic performance from Jamaica.
Throughout the song, he addresses many current issues affecting the world in a passionate manner which his performances have become synonymous with.
The performance ends with an impressive display of the fauna that Jamaica is well known for. The I Wanna Be Loved singer also recently showed that he is truly about helping the poor and educating the masses as he announced that he established a scholarship in honour of his mother Murdine Clarke. The scholarship, named the Murdine Clarke Scholarship, was set up at his alma mater Denham Town High School. He revealed that the scholarship will be awarded to financially challenged boys at the school who persevere in pursuing their education in spite of poverty that they face.
Twitter fans were appreciative of his choice of song and delivery. This fan said: “Buju Banton, Excellent Song for our World right now, Great performance FireFireFire,” this one added: “Always a pleasure watching you perform! You represented well bujuu banton,” and this one added: “@bujubanton is the greatest!!!”
