Popcaan Takes A Dig At ‘Artists Doing Music To Trend On YouTube’
The Unruly Boss Popcaan has fans wondering if he’s throwing shade at newcomer Intence and long time rival Alkaline for catering to YouTube and just Dancehall fans within Jamaica.
Fans began speculating that he was baiting the two after he posted a series of photos alongside his spaceship on Instagram, with the caption: “All who only do music fi trend pan youtube put up unu hand🖐 🤔😂😂😂😂🤷🏿♂️.”
The post was accompanied by laughing emojis further prompting fans to think he was teasing Intence and Alkaline who have been dominating YouTube’s Popular In Jamaica trending list for the past few months with releases such as Antisocial , Yeng, Dry Eye and Cree, Ocean Wave, Nah Fi Like respectively.
It’s no secret that the ever-confident Popcaan, whose real name is Andre Sutherland, is feeling himself since the release of FIXTAPE . The album got international attention and debuted at No. 2 on Billboard Reggae Albums sales chart about two weeks ago and it also broke into the Top 100 on the Billboard 200 as the sixth-best debut of that week.
Over 112, 000 fans reacted to the Instagram post yesterday, and it may very well be aimed at Alkaline, who earlier this month dragged the release of Popcaan’s new album.
Other fans think it may be aimed at Intence simply because he’s new to the genre and has been focusing on the production of songs and music videos that appeal to Jamaican fans on YouTube. The young artiste has also achieved some success on the island’s Apple Music charts.
Beenie Man, who will soon release his nineteenth album, was the first to reply with a string of laughing emojis, indicating that he got the joke. Another artiste Protoje, who on Friday released his fifth album, said: “Breddaaaa take time no man.”
This fan added: “YouTube artiste dem mon unruly boss bigger than that tell dem to show what dem accomplish different from YouTube,” and another who agreed with him said: “Some blogger a hype up some man for YouTube dem should be a shame to be in the business so long and still don’t past YouTube and live foreign it’s a shame.”
In June, Popcaan’s former mentor Vybz Kartel said he was no longer interested in YouTube views or ‘trending’ on the video platform. “VybzKartel is bigga dan YouTube trending…lef it fi di kids …Gold n Platinum ai pre,” he said.
When Intence’s Tears Dem Dry briefly denied Kartel the No.1 Trending position on YouTube in April, the Worl’ Boss blasted the young deejay by accusing him of buying views. Intence responded saying that he won’t be baited, but Kartel clapped back, “If your music dont pass norman manley airport stfu peasant!”
