Doja Cat Says Her Next Album Is Dancehall And Afrobeat Inspired

Controversial American Hip-Hop singer Doja Cat says her upcoming third studio album will be Dancehall and Afrobeat inspired.

Doja Cat collected the Best New Artist award at the recent MTV Video Music Awards for 2020. She was also nominated for Song Of The Year.

In an interview with MTV post awards, she revealed that her next album will feature Dancehall, Afrobeat, funk and house styles. “It’s very similar to Hot Pink in the sense that each of the songs do have their own kind of personality,” she said of the singles.

“It’s not gonna be perfectly consistent,” she said but that she is “trying to cover all bases” with the genre range. “We have some dancehall stuff on there, we have some Afrobeat stuff, some funk, House…”

When asked what fans can expect from the new project, she said, “I’m always kind of winging it.” She didn’t divulge any further details of the album, including date of release and whether there are featured artistes.

Doja Cat, born Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamin, is one of America’s more talented new faces but albeit controversial. It’s unclear how the local Dancehall community will react to her borrowing from Dancehall- a genre that was developed by Jamaicans who are modern-day descendants of African slaves when Doja Cat has been outed as a racist early this year.

She’s known to be associated with homophobic slurs after coming under fire for defending her homophobic use of derogatory words against gay persons. In 2020, though, the artist who is herself of African descent was heavily boycotted and criticized when a song she recorded in 2015- “Dindu Nuffin” resurfaced.

The term is an alt-right term used to mock and ridicule African-American victims of police brutality who claim they “didn’t do nothing.” In her defense, she insisted that she does not have self-hatred or internalized racism.  The singer also denied that she led chatrooms with white racist males.

Of course, Dancehall has been promoted by the likes of Rihanna and Nicki Minaj, who are endeared to dancehall loyalists for their continued homage to the genre and even giving opportunities to artistes in the industry to promote their music. Rihanna’s upcoming Dancehall album reportedly features Jamaican sweetheart Koffee, Demarco, and others.
