Wayne Marshall Covers Tenor Saw’s ‘Lots Of Signs’
VP Records has released the third single for their upcoming Dancehall Anthems Project. The latest is a tribute to the late Tenor Saw with his 1985 single Lots Of Signs performed by Dancehall vocalist Wayne Marshall.
The initiative by VP Records will be a collection of new recordings of classic reggae and dancehall songs that span from the 1960s to 1990s otherwise known as the Golden Era. The full compilation is slated for official release next month on October 9th, 2020.
Record producer, Jeremy Harding who is responsible for the track selection and talent on the project is quite happy with the results Marshall produced. He said, “Tenor Saw is a challenging artist to emulate so Wayne Marshall did a really good job of being inspired by the soulfulness of the record and putting his own unique brand of soul on it.”
A true musical whiz, Marshall’s rendition captured the exact tone and quality of Saw’s vocals on the original track, of course with his own signature intonations. The modern-day remake is the ultimate toast to the legendary singer as it conveys a certain reminiscent value that which established the song for the hit it was at the time of the official release in the 80’s.
Sound system operators and radio presenters deemed the song an instantaneous classic, which preserved its future value. Wayne Marshall did an exceptional job bringing the track back to the fore, adding his standout voice to compliments Harding’s enhanced sound.
Tenor Saw (given name Clive Bright) was undeniably one of the musical pioneers of his time and is responsible for defining the 1980s Dancehall music. He has influenced a generation of singers, especially through his ear worming hit-singles such as Pumpkin Belly, Fever, and Run Come Call Me. His enduring Ring the Alarm, on the Stalag rhythm for producer Winston Riley’s Techniques label, is his most successful song.
At the height of his four-year reign, the 21-year-old Tenor was found dead with broken limbs near a Texas roadway in August 1988. Though the circumstances of his death remain shrouded in mystery, there is no denying Tenor Saw’s legacy lives on.
The Dancehall Anthems Project releases so far include Beenie Man’s remake of King Yellow Man’s classic, Zungguzungguguzungguzeng, along with a smashing performance of Michigan & Smiley’s 1979 hit, Nice Up The Dance performed by Kabaka Pyramid.
The forthcoming features will include Sean Paul, Agent Sasco, Runkus, Blvk H3ro, Bugle, and Royal Blu to take on classic material from Ken Boothe, Papa San, Louie Culture, et al.
