Popcaan Wanted To Join The Military, But Failed Maths On The Entrance Exam
Who would have thought that Dancehall heavyweight Popcaan had a serious interest in joining the military? Oh yes, he did!
That was his ideal career path until he failed the Mathematics section of the entrance examinations thereby cutting his first Dream short. It was then that he started to look seriously at pursuing a career in music instead, according to a live Instagram interview between the Unruly Boss and African radio disc jockey DJ4eign last week.
“Well you know everybody have them journey enuh and everybody have them story …probably if me never face dem struggles deh, me wouldn’t have a story to tell the world… mi journey just motivate me and me just put it inna me music you zeet,” Popcaan added.
During a 2012 interview with Complex, the My Way singer said he considered joining the Jamaica Defense Force because “me did like soldier life yunno.”
He added, “Yeah, me love the way how them suit look and the whole militancy ’bout them. Yeah. So me say me woulda be a soldier.”
Popcaan also spoke of his childhood where it was a real challenge getting to and from school daily. “When I was going to school in St Thomas I use to live far from the main road. I use to have to walk like 4 miles before I reach the bus stop. I think that is one of the reasons I am so fit these days,” he laughed on the Live with DJ4eign.
The singer, whose real name is Andre Sutherland, also had several other things to reveal like how his career was propelled having met, the now-imprisoned artiste Vybz Kartel.
Popcaan stated that it was his friend ‘Stamma Terror’ who did the initial introductions but the Any Weather artiste was intoxicated at the time and did not remember Popcaan at all, but fate would have it that they would meet again.
This time they met at a party called “My Scheme” where Popcaan performed. Vybz Kartel was highly impressed and years later, Kartel branded Popcaan as the ‘next Vybz Kartel,’ claiming his work ethic, attitude towards music, personality, and humility made him the perfect candidate to take over the Gaza Empire. Popcaan was then signed to Kartel’s Adidjaheim Records in 2008 and to date, Popcaan is still very grateful to Vybz Kartel for assisting him in his career path.
“Ah mi O.G dat still enuh.” Popcaan said, “a lot of people did know about mi talent and dem never try further it enuh.”
Despite that, Poppy claimed that he is unbothered by the haters who even try to get in touch with him at times. He laughed when speaking about this, after which he sang “but we nuh need dem. We just a stick to those who stick to the unruly story.”
