Beenie Man Dedicates Community Centre To His Late Mother And Grandfather
Dancehall veteran Beenie Man has gifted the community of Waterhouse a community centre, which he has named in honor of his recently departed mother and his paternal grandfather.
The centre which is dubbed “The Solomon & Lelieth Community Center” is now under development and according to a release on the Grammy winner’s Instagram page it “is a community initiative that is bolstered by the Beenie Man Foundation” that will serve Waterhouse and residents of nearby communities.
The centre is apparently being developed at the grounds of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church in that community which the singer notes was owned by his grandfather Solomon. The ‘King of the Dancehall’ indicated that the location has had a big impact on his development as it had housed the basic school where he initially attended and where he learned about Rastafari and Black Consciousness.
According to Beenie Man in a video uploaded to his account, Solomon played a big role in his musical development. “Him is the man weh fight fi my musical career, the man weh mek mi deh right here where I’m at” he remarked. For his mother role inn his life he commented “now without mi mother bringing me here, then I wouldn’t be here” he highlighted.
In a caption below the post he however went on further to state that the main goal of the community centre is to create an environment within the Waterhouse Community that will aid in youth development. “During these uncertain rough times, I understand the struggles the youths are facing. Their new normal is now virtual learning” he wrote.
He continued that “with this community center, it will afford youths from the Waterhouse Community and neighboring communities the access needed to assist them with materials needed for them to learn and better adjust to this unfortunate shift in their lives”.
Beenie Man’s mother, Lillieth Sewell died in September after being hospitalized for some time.
