90s Dancehall Legend Mega Banton Eyeing A Comeback In 2021
One of Dancehall’s most known clash track creators Mega Banton is aiming to make a comeback on the scene later this year and is hoping for a bumper 2021.
Lovers of Dancehall will remember Mega Banton’s Sound Boy Killing , which was released in 1993, and dominated clashes for the rest of that decade and is still used by some deejays in the heat of a clash. Mega Banton shot to fame because of his unique raspy and bass-filled voiced which intimidated many deejays back in the day. It’s also amazing to note that he released that song when he was a teenager with guidance from producer Jack Scorpio.
Speaking to Clinton Lindsay of Foundation Radio Network, Mega revealed that, like many other Jamaican artistes, the coronavirus pandemic has affected his trade negatively but he has a number of songs that he is hoping to release by the end of the year. He has been so negatively affected that he’s only released one song for the year so far. That song was Golden Moment which was self-produced and recorded with his son, deejay Status.
“Mi have a whole heap a song fi put out. Mi jus’ want even one catch on in di streets an’ everything will fall in place,” he told Lindsay.
The Money First singer also said that he is well aware that he hasn’t had a hit in many years but he’s eager to get back into Dancehall. His last successful tune was The Wedding , a lovers rock number which did fairly well in Jamaica when it was released in 2014.
Mega Banton, whose real name Garth Williams is from Waterford, just outside of Kingston, which is famously known as the place where Vybz Kartel ran his infamous Gaza Empire.
Sound Boy Killing, considered a cult favorite, is still his biggest hit and is the reason that he has fans around the world including the United States, Europe, and Africa.
Even with the huge success of that song, he said that he’s never really felt pressure to recreate a song like that. “Never! But people always ask mi if naah do a next soun’ song. Mi have one a work pon now.”
One thing is for sure, Dancehall fans will be looking forward to what the deejay has to offer in the coming months.
