George Nooks Back in Court On Cocaine Charges, Granted 300K Bail

Reggae Star George Nooks is again back in court on charges of possession of cocaine and perverting the course of justice.

The entertainer who appeared in the parish court on Friday (October 25) and is represented by Christopher Townsend pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Nooks was charged a day earlier by the narcotics police following a ruling by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

The charges stem from a April 26, 2019 incident, in which Nooks was at a plaza in the corporate area where he was found in possession of cocaine.

Nooks denied the allegations and was subsequently released by the police and a form sent to the DPP.

He was offered bail in the sum of $300,000 and is to return to court on January 13, 2021.

In 2019, Nooks beat a similar case in which he was charged under breaches of the Dangerous Drugs Act.

The entertainer, who was previously found not guilty after the judge noted that there were “several inconsistencies” in the prosecution’s case, was represented by Queen’s Counsel Tom Tavares-Finson. Following the ruling, Nooks said he was elated, particularly because he could refocus his energies on music, as the court proceeding had taken a toll on his ability to release new songs.

57-year-old Nooks has been in the entertainment industry since the 1970s when he made his debut as deejay Prince Mohammed under the tutelage of producer Joe Gibbs.

Nooks took a hiatus from music and returned with his 2001 smash-hit God is Standing By a cover of Al Green’s gospel hit of the same name.
