Lisa Mercedez is not resting on her laurels and following her successful features on Of Dons and Divas with Vybz Kartel, she’s hoping to ride the wave of success. Mercedez who was born in Jamaica and now resides in England has announced the release of her latest track Bumpa from her debut EP Drama Free.

“‘Bumpa’ is the ideal song to get you in a party-mood at home. Wherever you are it could be in your kitchen, bedroom or bathroom. Once Bumpa starts playing it mek yuh wah dance and caan stop!” she said through a press release. The EP was produced by The FaNaTiX.

According to a release: “‘Bumpa’ is a rhythmic cut igniting memories of late nights and dancing with friends. ‘Bumpa’ marks the second release from Drama Free, joining the indelible recent drop ‘Night Love’ from the project.”

The Drama Free EP promises to deliver a new sound for Mercedez and features some veterans in the genre like Ninjaman. The Worl’ Boss and Culan are also featured on the EP, which is expected on October 30.

“This project means everything to me because it’s my first time putting together a body of work like this and I feel honoured to have such a variety of artists whose work I love featuring on it. It’s a privilege to have legends like Vybz Kartel on the project who I’ve always looked up to. It’s always great working with different creative people. I feel that I’ve evolved a lot over the years as an artist, obviously dancehall is my core but I’m influenced by the English scene and culture as well. Hopefully my fans will see my diversity and the fun side of me and let their hair done and just have fun.”

She also spoke with the Jamaica Star about her journey to getting to this point in her career.

“I feel that I’ve evolved a lot over the years. I think my journey from Jamaica, adapting to British culture has had a huge influence on my artistic expression and how I have developed. I have a lot more confidence in myself and my abilities. I am a lot more focused and hard-working and I am dedicated to getting the best results with anything I try at.”

Her journey has enabled her to grow as an artiste she added: “As an artiste, you always grow. That’s what any type of ‘art’ is about. I believe in constantly trying to perfect my craft and pushing myself beyond boundaries. I have become more thick-skinned and I’m at a place now where I don’t let the naysayers, the doubters get the best of me. Instead, I let them motivate me and that’s how I know I’m ready to take my place in this industry.”

The State Evidence singer, who in June claimed that Kartel was her new beau, also told Star about her admiration of his unique skills.

“It has been a blessing to be able to work with a legendary artiste like Vybz Kartel. He has always inspired my music and it’s great to have his support but we got introduced through our musical connections,” she said. “I have been doing music for a long time and it is my talent that enabled me to work with the greats like Kartel. So people can say what they want about how I got to where I am, I know the truth and so the chatter doesn’t faze me one bit.”

Mercedez has definitely built up her catalog as she continues to pursue Dancehall and has collaborated with some big names like Sneakbo, Stefflon Don, Ms Banks and Preditah. She added that she was hoping to be a definitive voice for the new generation of Dancehall artistes.
