Demarco Thinks Masicka Ruined ‘Leader’ Collab With Dexta Daps
Dancehall all-rounder Demarco and deejay Masicka have not exactly had the most harmonious history, but that doesn’t stop Demarco from giving his opinion on the Top Form singer’s music.
In addressing their fallout on the Wizology Show on Instagram last night, Demarco praised Masicka‘s talent but voiced his disappointment in the deejay’s verse on the 2019 track Leader, recorded alongside Dexta Daps.
“The song start off like an inspirational song and then me a hear bout gun inna lap and something gyal and fat p-m p-m gyal, like what? It hurt me. The melody and everything fi di song sweet and den di man go f–k up the song.”
He added that the track could have superseded the success of his 2011 track I Love My Life had Masicka chosen a more lyrically-universal direction.
“A di baddest melody, a di baddest song,” he said. “Him waan fi sing fi di corner and nuh know seh you a big artiste now youth, yuh nuh travel? Yuh go out inna di world. From yuh hear a song like this that shouldn’t even go inna yuh brain fi mention gun and fat pm pm gyal… Mi believe inna dah song deh.”
He added, “When di song just come out mi a seh, ‘I Love My Life’ gone, dem tek I Love My Life outta di spot’. Den when mi hear ‘Shotta we ready fi press di trigger’ mi seh, ‘Okay we good over here’.”
Masicka’s verse said in part:
Gyal a gimme pu**y, supm fat inna di traffic
Turning up di profit dat a cash inna mi pocket
Food inna di fridge, wul heap a shot inna mi matic…
While on the chorus he belts:
Dappa dem fi know seh man a leader
Shotta dem ready fi press di trigger…
The Dunw3ll-produced record has more than three million streams on Spotify and 16 million streams on YouTube. Demarco’s I Love My Life has more than seven million streams on Spotify and over 10 million streams on YouTube.
Despite his criticism, Demarco said he has no ill-feelings towards Masicka.
According to the Fallen Soldiers hitmaker, it was Masicka who sought to create a rivalry in 2014 in his quest for fame.
“Me always a go give credit where it’s due, a bad artiste, but at that time he was nobody, him never buss,” he said. “A me was the hot artiste in 2014 cause mi have the whole heap a hits…so he wanted to test the hot artiste at that time so him start do a bag of songs weh a diss me.”
Demarco would later go on to liken Masicka’s career to nylon fishing string, suggestive of his struggle to land a breakout hit.
The statement, which was made during a 2014 appearance on Onstage, was reposted by Masicka earlier this year as he jabbed at the artiste for not believing in him. The post resulted in a brief online spat of shade and figures between the men, but Demarco maintains that he has no issues with Masicka, and only wished the Genahsyde deejay had employed another approach in finding his footing in the music business.
“Him is a artiste weh him so talented him don’t haffi a diss people, him diss whole heap a people a try fi get inna di game. Him never did haffi use that strategy, him coulda just do him music how him a do it and reach where him a reach… But weh mi get fi understand a nuh really him, him a get program fi go at them man deh… But mi nav nutten ‘gainst him, him a bad artiste.”
