Popcaan Serves Up Doses Of Inspiration In Two New Songs, ‘Win’ And ‘Medal’
Doing what he does best, Dancehall artist Popcaan drops two uplifting new singles today that are already getting massive appeal from the fans. The tracks, Win and Medal, carry similar storylines of persevering through hardships and adversities.
Win took the stage first, releasing earlier this afternoon with an accompanying music video, which was directed and produced by ShotByDollaz. Already trending in Jamaica, the single is a mantra about winning at all things in life. Coming from humble beginnings of his own, Popcaan sings his encouraging words in sincere dials to show the youths that they too can achieve greatness no matter what their situation is right now.
“Although dah life yah nuh easy, know seh we haffi win yeah,” he says while pointing out shoddy professions that could make one feel there is no hope. “People Downtown weh a sell pon di streets, who a work pon truck in a garbage bin, youth dem in a di shop weh a do di buzz trim … Life no easy fi nobaddy, could a Star, could a Gleaner (paperboys)… Know seh we haffi win.”
Other memorable lines were, “Politicians seh dem care, Mi only know Kavell Keir,” a rare mention of his former Trinidadian girlfriend.
The music video, “An Unruly Motion Picture” starring Popcaan as “Coach” and popular TV host, Neville Bell as the “The Obstacle,” plots a basketball game to teach a lesson of maintaining focus and strategic work ethic to ultimately Win the game and subsequently earn the medal.
This brings us to Popcaan’s second release today, Medal, and what could only be Part 2 to the saga prior. Here Poppy portrays himself as one of life’s greatest achievers, “Mi work hard fi wah mi want dawg, full a ambition, nuh fraid fi buss a sweat,” he says drawing comparisons to many iconic go-getters.
These include great athletes such as Kobe Bryant, Usain Bolt, Michael Phelps, and Lebron James, also the artist, Pablo Picasso, golfer Tiger Woods and even the skillful and clever TV series character, MacGyver, among several other noteworthy mentions.
While the Firm and Strong deejay portrays himself as worthy of these supreme medals too, he also encourages his listeners to, “believe in yourself” and strive for their own medals.
