Downsound Drops New Riddim To Bolster Emerging Dancehall Artists
Downsound Records (DSR) recently dropped its Storm Trooper Riddim, the label’s first riddim project in five years.
Released on February 26, the Storm Trooper project seeks to highlight new talent now attached to the label. According to the label’s management team while it is customary to pack riddims with household names, this project takes on a different approach, and zeroes-in on new emerging acts.
Downsound Records believes this focus on emerging talent may be the winning formula as it is strategic yet cautious approach, which puts at its forefront the future, which is the youth.
“In this period of uncertainty which is the new normal we threw out this rhythm and put some focus and emphasis behind some new talent,” said DSR’s CEO Josef Bagdonavich.
“We look forward to seeing how they develop and the response they get,” Bagdonavich added.
The riddim, created by Kunley ‘Da Kulprit’ McCarthy, received early support from selectors including Boom Boom and Harry Hype, which has resulted in songs by the young artists, as well as, a few of the tunes by the established acts, gaining traction within the dancehall space.
Featured on the Storm Trooper are Birthday by D’Yani, Lipstick by Marcy Chin, Red Label by Montego Bay-based Sliq One, Murda by Youngwildapache, Bottles by Harry Toddler, Your Night by Ce’Cile, Stick a Bet by IWaata and Expensive by Munga Honorable.
The Storm Trooper Riddim is executively produced by Bagdonavich with production orchestration from Cordell ‘Skatta’ Burrell and Badgyal Ce’Cile at the helm, alongside a team of producers ‘Da Kulprit’ McCarthy, Jay and Penny Bling.
