Popcaan’s Mom Miss Rhona Reveals Which Three Of His Songs Are Fit For Her Ears
Over the years, Dancehall fans have come to know Miss Rhona — the no-nonsense, devoted Christian, and pastor mother of Dancehall superstar Popcaan — through his mentions of her in music and their funny videos and interactions on Instagram.
The thought has crossed the minds of many as to how she really feels about some of his music. Well, she has declared a mere three as her favorite tracks from the extensive Unruly collection, one of which is his most recent release – God Is Love with Beres Hammond.
Miss Rhona Johnston told The Sunday Gleaner today that she is especially thankful to Beres, a respected veteran in the music industry and the producers of the new track for allowing her son the opportunity to show everyone his spiritual side.
“I want to give thanks for Beres Hammond, who is a legend, to collaborate with him on the song, that is giving praise especially in these times; for the producer Shane Brown, for making the rhythm that is the framework for the song. I also pray he will try to do more songs like this for all ages to listen to,” she said and also thanked God for inspiring her son to do a song of this nature.
Miss Rhona wanted to remind everyone that Popcaan, who was partly raised by his grandmother; a pastor as well, is a spiritual person having grown up in the church and even joined the choir where he initially began performing. She’s proud to see her son expressing his faith for everyone to hear but also pointed out that, in listening to the new single, persons should pay keen attention to the words of the song.
She said, “Don’t look at him as the individual, pull strength from what he is saying. The mere fact he calls himself the ‘Unruly Boss’ a lot of people brand him that way, but to see the disciplined man that Beres is, he is being steered in the right direction.”
Miss Rhona is happy and proud, not only with Popcaan’s teaming with Beres but also that he did a song that she can turn on her television after she comes home from church.
Miss Rhona’s Other Favs…
As for the other songs that are fit for her ears, Miss Rhona admitted that she only listens to We Pray , Popcaan’s collab with Reggae crooner Dre Island and his 2017 hit single, Family.
“To be honest, I rather him to be a Christian doing gospel,” she said but knows all too well that Popcaan does what he wants as with many children when they become adults.
“One thing I do remind him is that whatever he does, it comes from God, so make sure He is involved and that you give Him thanks and do not do anything that will grieve the spirit of Almighty God that will take away your blessings,” she continued.
Miss Rhona said Popcaan reminds her a lot of herself; troublesome and a deep-thinker are two characteristics they share and she admits is a reflection of her.
“I think he has a lot of my nature; I am a little troublesome at times too but he knows when it comes to God, I don’t play around. I am a devoted woman of God. There are some songs playing sometimes, if I go into the streets of downtown and hear them, I have to run and he teases me but that is how he always is,” she shared.
It is also the very reason why many fans of the Dancehall star will know his mother.
Popcaan enthusiastically teases Miss Rhona on the daily and has shared several of those incidences online to the amusement of his followers. The two have dynamic chemistry though they’ve drifted apart in their religious beliefs – with Popcaan giving his praises to Selassie.
Nonetheless, they love and support each other unconditionally. In 2019, Popcaan surprised his mother with a trip to Jerusalem to visit the official tomb of Jesus, and last year as an Easter Sunday gift, he attended a church service where she was leading the prayers.
