In Trinidad and Tobago, Dancehall artists are continuing to push their way through to the ears and hearts of the masses.  The genre has been drawing talent from the twin-island nation and the world has taken notice.

Music has been an important tool in surviving the pandemic and T&T’s dancehall artists have been doing their part by releasing bangers over the last few months.  From the fierce lyrics of Prince Swanny to the raw positivity of Logiq and everything in between, here are some of the tracks that have recently caught our attention.

A call to females to live their best sex life, Freak isn’t for the faint of heart. Since being released, the official audio has gained close to 2 million views.

New Uprising – Boy Boy

Boy Boy brings the other side of the ghetto youth story to the forefront in his latest track produced by The Hideout Clothing and Travis World. The video features provocative imagery of police brutality in the Caribbean and United States.

Protection – Logiq

With an opening like “Father God show me meh friends please/ ‘cause meh done know all mi enemies”,  Protection resonated with music lovers in and out of the Reggae/ Dancehall realm. Produced by Nine Mind Entertainment (T&T) and Lenkey Records (JA), it continues to be one of the most popular songs out of Trinidad since its release in January.

Run Up – Kalonji

It’s easy to forget that Run Up is a ‘gunman chune’ while listening to Kalonji’s impressive harmonic styling.

Oui – Zerimar

Zerimar is a rising star with a different approach to music. He is most known for his 2020 hit Arima but his ability to write and sing ‘fi di gyal dem’ is where he really shines.

From one of the newer voices in the game, Swing Pon Dem Ends is a dangerous warning on a calm instrumental riddim.

Outside – Jahllano, Rheon Elbourne

Do we Zess or Salsa? Who knows. Rheon Elbourne links with Jahllano to create this Latin-infused Dancehall banger.

Sunshine and Rain – Jovi Ton

Just released! from Jovi Ton, who is known for his violent music. It seems a lot has changed with the passing of his brothers in music, Rebel Sixx and K-Lion. Sunshine and Rain is a slow groove with a positive message to anyone that has had hard times.
