Two-time Grammy nominee Skip Marley shared the secrets to his mellow sounds and signature dreadlocks in a recent interview. The Lions singer’s list of feats is steadily increasing, and he received a nod in the Outstanding New Artist category at this year’s NAACP Image Awards. Slowing things down to answer 21 Questions for BET, Skip spoke on his fondest memories in the family business, his loc care routine, and more.

The 2nd generation Marley is already making strides on Tuff Gong turf and he cites his Rastafarian faith as a grounding force against “overrated” fame. He starts every day with a prayer, and even the simple act of maintaining his hairstyle adds meaning to the singer’s life.

“My locks represent me. How yuh identify me is mi locks,” Skip said. “They represent togetherness, spirituality, life itself and its experiences. It’s part of who I am, the locs have a story. I think my locs are still telling the story we jus haffi wait and see,” he laughed.

His religious convictions have strengthened over the years, and back in 2015, the singer told Vogue that he hasn’t cut his hair since birth. “I just looked on my grandfather from since I was small and said, ‘He didn’t cut his hair, so I don’t want to cut mine, either,” Skip said smiling. “Never, never, ever, and I shall not.”

So what’s Skip Marley’s key to maintaining healthy locs?

“I’d say you have to get them twisted every once in a while, keep them clean. Eat good, yuh haffi eat good enuh cause is vitamins,” Skip said, pointing to his waist length mane. ”Sometime yuh haffi give it a likkle ginger soak too fi get out all di lint and all dat stuff”.

It’s not often we hear intimate secrets from inside the Marley clan.

Skip also dishes on his daily routine, the tearful response to his first performance and his favorite song from the Gong’s remarkable catalogue.
