Quada Mocks Skillibeng Over New Song ‘Yo!,’ Fans Tell The Popcaan Protégé To Go Make A Hit Song
Dancehall artist Skillibeng can’t seem to catch a break since the release of his latest track Yo! After many fans dragged the deejay last week for what they say were over-confidently written “nursery rhyme” lyrics, he is once again the center of ridicule and this time around the jests are coming from his industry compatriot, Quada.
During a recent Instagram Live video, Quada, who is signed to Popcaan‘s Unruly Entertainment, is seen goofing around with friends as they attempt a game of random word freestyle in a backyard vibe. The Celebration singer is up first on the invisible mic and is thrown the cue, “gunman, yuh hand, yuh hand” from one of his cronies.
In his best Skillibeng voice he utters some nonsensical rhyming, “Mi haffi wave mi hand, ah mi hand, ah my hand, ah mi left hand,” he spits but unable to hold his composure any longer, broke out laughing at his own ridiculousness.
One of the guys from the crew seemingly knew exactly whom Quada was imitating but wanted viewers to actually hear it anyway, he asked the deejay aloud, “Ah who you a sing like?” But Quada quickly caught on to the coax and playfully shoved him to proceed, “From mi say Yo!” where everyone erupted laughing upon realizing it was the hook of Skillibeng’s track Yo!
Quada could be looking for his next big hit and the best way is to simply follow what the hitmakers do. Skilli’s “nonsensical” track is currently trending on YouTube in Jamaica, just over a week after its release on March 26. This is no new feat for the EastSyde star boy, being a frequent visitor on the platform and more so than his Unruly counterpart.
“Quada freestyle is a hit then 😂🤣😁😭🤣 cuz mi hear man a seh yow pow is a hit 😳😁😂🤣😭,” said one close observer on the matter.
Others pointed out that Quada wasn’t in the same league as Skilli, so he might want to refrain from poking jokes at Dancehall’s Fresh Prince and go find a hit song of his own.
“Quada can’t laugh at skillibeng a unity we say plus Quada nu ina skillibeng lane nor league,” said one fan.
Others added, “Bwoy quada fi go try find a song,” and “Skillibeng experiment dem a reach the world and dem a react positively so quada need fi tek sum’n outta skilli book coz him stil no find a popular song yet much less a hit. A skillibeng a lead.”
Skillibeng has clearly figured out the secret sauce to making hit songs, there’s no denying his tracks Brik Pan Brik, Crocodile Teeth, and Mr. Universe were some of the biggest hits of the last two years.
Yo!’s effortless bars seem to be Skilli’s intentional doing, a classic example of ‘riding the riddim’, and just inserting inconspicuous lyrics to highlight the beat more than anything. The track continues to get mixed reactions from audiences. The ones who love it recognize the Brain Parts deejay’s wit and artistry, while the ones that have criticized it, actually find it laughable and unbearable.
While he might be as skillful as they come in the game, his name wasn’t established to toot his lyrical craft but was rather a popular slang or toasting style used by Dancehall deejays in the 80s and early 90s.
Speaking with BBC 1 Xtra’s Seani B in an interview earlier this year, Skillibeng said he has re-invented that notion, “The meaning of Skillibeng is Dancehall. It isn’t a word weh inna the dictionary or encyclopaedia. Is a name weh mi pick fi mi self, weh mi did hear people a sing it from dem time deh as a likkle slang thing.”
He added, “But now when a man say ‘Skillibeng,’ him affi say Dancehall or supmn weh affi do wid Dancehall, is a natural name. A di best name fi mi now!”
