Chronixx Salutes Popcaan For Having The “Craziest Melodies In Jamaican Music History”
Reggae crooner Chronixx saluted Popcaan’s artistry on Instagram, following the release of the official video for Medal. The Grammy-nominated singer lauded the Unruly Boss for having the craziest sounds in the genre’s 40-year history. It’s an incredible show of respect from Chronixx, a former choir director and backup singer to gospel artist Jermaine Edwards and Reggae artist Lutan Fyah, and many are already hopeful a collaboration is in the works.
Without tagging him in his IG Story yesterday, the Here Comes Trouble singer praised the Chubble deejay and encouraged him to stay in his prolific lane.
“Popcaan have the craziest melodies in Jamaican music history,” Chronixx said. “I don’t understand where in the cosmos those arrangement of notes are coming from. Honestly. What ever you tune into bro….stay in tune wid dat!!!! Melody and harmony are everything.”
Popcaan later re-shared the Story and wrote, “@chronixxmusic blessings chrondada, me a play the harp wid melody like David!!!”
While the Likes crooner didn’t name a specific song, he could easily be referring to Popcaan’s Medal which was released in February and received a video treatment yesterday.
The Young Vibes production sees Popcaan in full singjay mode, bordering on an R&B vibe on the piano-tinged track. Following on the heels of Poppy’s sentimental God Is Love link-up with Beres Hammond, this is yet another single his devout Christian mom, Ms. Rhona, could proudly play and share.
“So mi seh gimme di trophy dem/ Mi enemy, mi doh see dem/ Great like Muhammad Ali and Kobe dem/ Believe in yuhself/ Yeah yuh know seh mi fate different/ Wul ah wi ah pray fi di COVID end,” he spits on the track.
Aside from the melodies and arrangements, Chronixx described, Popcaan’s expert songwriting is also on display in the 3-minute song and video. He name drops many of the greats from Phelps to Picasso and Freddie McGregor over sonorous backing vocals, setting the pace for another hit.
“Put mi foot inna di starter block/ When mi run outta dat/ People catch heart attack/ See di finish line, mi nah go ever stop/ Yuh know mi extra fit, gi’ dem ah extra lap,” Popcaan sings, squashing his so-called Bolt beef with a nod to the legend, “If ah running, den ah Bolt.”
All this may be what led the usually elusive Chronixx to speak up on social media.
It was alleged that he and Popcaan were beefing during the very early days of their careers. Chronixx’s slick line on 2013’s Odd Ras , “mi nah sing bout nuh party buck and mi nuh show mi underpants fi buss”, was seen as a direct jab at Popcaan’s 2012 hit, Party Shot : “Him seh party buck, like bull cow/ One ‘mount of Sheara mi jeans dem hol’.”
Both artists have moved on amicably since, with Chron Dada calling the 876 GUD a “giant now!” at the height of the hype surrounding last year’s FIXTAPE album and Popcaan’s Like Royalty collab with Protoje.
Popcaan also gave a special shout-out to the reggae revivalist in 2020. His virtual BBC 1Xtra performance featured drummer Hector Lewis from Chronixx’s ZincFence Redemption band, and Poppy gave a salute when he spotted the branded gear. The Skanking Sweet singer reshared a clip of the performance a day later on Instagram with the caption, “Unruly galaxy”.
