Sean Paul, Shaggy

With just a 4-year age difference, Jamaican artists Sean Paul and Shaggy snatched mainstream success around the same time in the early 2000s. Though Shaggy, 52, went a little more left into Reggae and Paul, 48, drifted right into Dancehall, their accomplishments have followed a similar path to stardom.

Both have locked in several studio albums, appeared in films, and snatched a few music awards here and there, including a bunch of Grammy nominations and wins. They’ve been marked in the Reggae & Dancehall archives as two pioneering and iconic acts who took the genre to the international stage.

But who has more money?

These cats aren’t the flashiest celebrities you’ll see around town but they are certainly worth a lot more than the average local musician. Interestingly, they both acquired some pretty pricey real estate recently. Sean self-built a chic contemporary home in Kingston, Jamaica for an undisclosed amount in 2019, and Shaggy copped a mid-century style home in Miami, Florida worth US$2.15 million in January of this year.

Combined with their other assets are earnings from music and entertainment projects such as tours/live shows, royalties, advances, endorsement, merch, advertising, and licensing fees for their music.

Sean Paul’s Net Worth is $25 Million

As of this year, Paul’s net worth was estimated at US$25 million according to CelebrityNetWorth. The Reggae & Dancehall recording artist and music producer has 8 studio albums.  He released his first, Stage One in 2000 with VP Records but it wasn’t until his subsequent album releases, Dutty Rock (2002) and The Trinity (2005) that he saw momentous success in his career.

Dutty Rock peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Reggae Album chart with five Top 15 Billboard Hot 100 hits: Gimme the LightBaby Boy featuring Beyonce, Like Glue, Get Busy, and I’m Still in Love With You which featured Sasha.  Dutty Rock was certified multi-platinum and also won Sean his first Grammy award in 2004 for the Best Reggae Album of the year.

Paul’s other albums The Trinity (2005), Imperial Blaze (2009), and the Best Reggae Album Grammy nominees, Tomahawk Technique (2012) and Full Frequency (2014) would churn out chart-topping singles like Temperature, Give It Up To Me featuring Keyshia Cole, She Doesn’t Mind, and Got 2 Luv U with American singer Alexis Jordan among others.

By then, Sean Paul had established himself as one of the most sought-after musical artists of the decade, collaborating with some pretty major international acts from DMX, Beyonce, Nicki Minaj, Pharrell Williams, Major Lazer to Enrique Iglesias. Through those features he would continue topping the music charts across the globe, eventually touring and performing for audiences from Latin America to Asia, also appearing on several television shows abroad, and consequently raking in numerous streams of royalties.

Paul’s career took on another tier of glory in 2016 and beyond when he was featured on three largely successful hit singles; Cheap Thrills with Australian singer Sia, which became an international hit, reaching No. 1 in more than 15 countries. Another, Hair with girl band Little Mix and Rockabye with crossover group Clean Bandit, which spent nine consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart, and gained the coveted Christmas No. 1 spot.

Later came his banger No Lie featuring Dua Lipa and then his hypnotic duet Calling On Me with Swedish singer Tove Lo in 2020.

Sean remains as relevant today as he was during the peak of his career. He’s now a father of two, and though the COVID pandemic has paused certain aspects of his musical ventures, he doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon. He launched his seventh studio album Live N’ Livin  in March of this year and what will be his eighth, Scorcher is near release this May.

It doesn’t end there for Dutty Paul, as he recently inked a deal Realvibez Merchandising company with Blue Mahoe Capital Partners Inc. last month. The Florida-based company will be majority-owned by investment firm Blue Mahoe Capital, while Sean Paul will have part ownership, including a seat on the board with voting rights. Another notable endorsement was his feature on a Pepsi Commercial song last year for The Jamaica Association of Belize, providing his verses on the single Boasty with Wiley, Stefflon Don & Idris Elba.

Not all goes in the pocket, The Sean Paul Foundation is live and kickin’, having donated food and care packages  to over 90 families in need over the Christmas holidays and again this year, joined forces with Food For The Poor Jamaica to help 120 families in Yallahs, St Thomas.

In a partnership with Flow Foundation and the Sandals Foundation, Paul also teamed up to distribute 200 Android Tablets to primary school students across the island. He has also contributed significantly over the years to the Shaggy And Friends concert for aid at the Bustamante Children’s hospital, whether appearing on the show or monetary contributions.

Shaggy’s Net Worth is $14 Million

As of this year, Shaggy’s net worth was estimated at US$ 14 million, according to CelebrityNetWorth. The Reggae singer, deejay, and actor acquired his wealth from 15 studio albums including a collaboration album with English musician Sting – three of which were certified platinum and one gold.  He has appeared in 5 film productions, including a Broadway show recently, The Little Mermaid Live in 2019 along with numerous other television features.

Shaggy’s launch into music quickly saw success with his single Boombastic (1995) on the album Bombastic which snagged the Grammy award for Best Reggae Album in 1996.

His smash hits It Wasn’t Me and Angel in 2001 topped the Billboard Hot 100 charts and reached No. 1 in countries such as the UK, Ireland, Scotland, and France among others.  The singles appeared on Hot Shot which peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and would go on to be certified 8x platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), as well as achieving multi-platinum status in a number of other countries.  It was ranked as the second most successful album of 2001 on the Billboard Year-End charts.

Shaggy had become arguably the biggest crossover success in Reggae and Dancehall at the time becoming the genre’s most commercially potent artist in the international market. He went on to tour the world, performing on massive stages in Africa, Tanzania, Singapore, Canada, India, and the U.S. to name a few, even solicited to do an exclusive for Michael Jackson’s 30th-anniversary celebration in 2001.

Shaggy has had several Grammy nominations, including another Grammy win in 2019, for 44/876 with Sting, plus countless chart-topping successes, and several best-selling Reggae songs in various parts of the world.

He has embarked on various endorsement deals, appearing in ads for Cheetos, Pepsi Cola, Ferrero Rocher’s Ice Cream Bar, Maxi King and contributed to the commercials’ backup songs. Shaggy also acted as the international icon for Ultimate Ear products for the brand Logitech.

When he’s not recording his own tracks, Shaggy spends his time producing music under his label, Ranch Entertainment, which he launched in 2012 with locations both in New York and Jamaica. He has a big production to début soon, an album for the Queen of Dancehall Spice.

The Reggae star certainly has a knack for raking it in as can be seen with his work in philanthropy. His Shaggy Make A Difference Foundation, which is responsible for the annual Shaggy And Friends concert has been instrumental in raising millions of dollars for the Bustamante Children Hospital in Jamaica, in 2018 it netted JA $100 million in proceeds. Even exploring other avenues to raise funds, he co-wrote a book and CD set entitled Shaggy Parrot and the Reggae Band issuing proceeds to the Tatiana McIntosh Scholarship Fund in Florida and basic schools across the island. He has also partnered with Pan Caribbean Financial planners annual SIGMA Corporate Run, which has raised over JA$14 million for the Bustamante Hospital.
