Popcaan Infuses His Rags To Riches Story In New Visuals For ‘Survivor’: Watch
Months after dropping his sonic new year’s resolution Relevant, Popcaan declares he’s a Survivor with a fresh track and visuals.
He’s topped trending across streaming platforms with almost every 2021 single so far, from the prayerful ode, God Is Love featuring reggae icon Beres Hammond, to Jungle Justice (Part Twice) , his raw, riled up reaction to violence against women.
Popcaan has been on a roll, releasing hit after hit despite the crippling pandemic. His latest song chronicles his rise from unknown talent to Unruly Boss, paying homage to helping hands throughout the journey. The accompanying music video extends the introspection, showcasing the star in his hometown 3 West stomping grounds, all the way to him flexing in the lap of luxury.
It would come as no surprise if Popcaan’s surge in output was owing to a more ‘solid focus’ during lockdown. Ironically, that’s the name of the Terror Family produced riddim that gives Survivor its standout guitar tones, with the full compilation of tracks set for later release.
Stamma T of Terror Family Production — the man who first introduced Popcaan to Vybz Kartel — expressed that although it was his first major project working with his close friend, he was “very thrilled” with the finished product.
“To say I’m pleased with the outcome would be an understatement, the song brings forward so many memorable moments that we shared throughout our friendship,” Stamma T said in a release.
Another member of the production outfit, Mark Lawrence, added that the breezy, chilled-out track was “very instrumental” in helping the team score an EP deal with international distribution outlet EMPIRE.
The song is the latest in Popcaan’s more diverse sounding offerings, bordering on a reggae/R&B meld. It’s gotten the attention of typically elusive reggae star Chronixx, who recently lauded the Silence deejay on IG for having the “craziest melodies” in the game.
With its mid-tempo pulse and mystical backing vocals, it’s clear why this one resonated with record execs.
Add to that Popcaan’s honest songwriting, infusing his rags to riches story with verve. “Man used to sleep ah road fi days/ When dem see di GUD yah now me know seh dem amazed/ Treatin’ him like Jesus now dem givin him di praise…/ Now mi have bout hundred keys/ Ah nuh nuttin fi spend hundred G’s / Rhona and Fada Shag star baby,” he spits on the track.
Kryss Ras and Prof of Tower Music Group take the reins on the reel, delivering visuals as sunny as Popcaan’s outlook. Eye-catching and unpredictable angles capture Popcaan’s antics in the streets and even on the golf course for some lavish fun with the ladies. He’s earned the right to live it up as the song suggests, and we see all the ways the deejay can now “flourish like a palm tree” — from the chilled champagne to the “big spaceship” Range Rover.
Inching towards the 100K mark on YouTube, fans are already praising Poppy for his consistency, and an upful start to the weekend. One fan commented, “The best dancehall artist in our generation 🤘🤘dat is it mi fadah … big up @terror family while another said, “Unruly never disappoint…D man crazy🔥🔥🔥 song a the baddest…millionaire lifestyle 👌.”
