Vybz Kartel – Beyond The Music
The name Vybz Kartel is a loaded one. In addition to being a legend in Dancehall, he’s also a convicted murderer serving a life sentence in Jamaica.
For many Adidja Palmer is an artist like none other. He remains one of the most innovative and lyrical craftsmen to have graced Jamaican dancehall. His style and musical influence has permanently impacted Jamaica’s urban culture and some may argue it hasn’t been for the better. However, throughout his legal troubles, many have continued to speak to a man that is quite different from the man in the spotlight.
“Kind and caring to those around and business minded,” said a close friend when asked to describe the icon in a few words. “The persona that goes into the public is very different.”
His upbringing was far removed from his music. Adidja grew up in a normal household with two strict parents who held strong principles and pushed the importance of education. This instilled a thirst for knowledge within him. Known to be an incessant reader who could ‘talk for hours on many topics’, Kartel often would prefer watching the Discovery and History channels in his room rather than go out after shows while on tour.
“He’s also a family-oriented man,” they went on to say, “Addi adores his children and continues to make efforts to be a part of their lives even from behind bars”.
He has also given back to his community. The Worl’ Boss has continued to donate to educational and community rehabilitation initiatives. Last April, he is reported to have contributed to the family of the late Jodian Fearon, who according to the Jamaica Gleaner, ‘died last April from from heart failure exacerbated by last-minute pregnancy-related stress’ after being denied admission to several local hospitals while being in labor. This year his team donated funds to 2-year-old Rajive Sievwright who was featured on American-based DJ Lava’s Chat & Live show and is suffering from neuroblastoma.
According to the source, “I know people see him as a lot of bad things and they probably not going to want to hear about this other part of him it’s a real aspect of him. I know a very normal, happy person”.
Vybz Kartel will be eligible for parole around 2046. His legal team, however, continues to fight for his release.
