Reggae songstress Naomi Cowan has written all her tracks for the ambitious project being undertaken alongside Toast co-producer, Walshy Fire.

According to Walshy, the Campion College old girl has put out her A-game, with penning the songs described as “feel-good tracks” exploring the topics of “love, heartbreak with a seamless blend of reggae, R&B, Afrobeats and Dancehall” during the entire pandemic.

“It’s going great.  She is dropping a song every single month,” the Half Way tree native told DancehallMag.

“We are going to do something that’s never been done before, as independent artistes, not signed, not backed by anybody.  We are going to drop an entire year’s worth of music.  One song a month, one mixed tape and two albums all in one year,” Walshy said.

Asked who will be on the songwriting team, Walshy hailed the former beauty queen and said: “Naomi will be writing them.  Naomi bad enuh.”

“Dem finish man.  Wi siddung di whole a COVID and meck dem.  Whole heap a song, crocus bag,” he added.

Naomi, who is a graduate of Ryerson University in Canada, is the daughter of Jamaican Reggae and Gospel singer Carlene Davis and Tommy Cowan, a music producer, songwriter and former road manager for Bob Marley.

She was recognized as the Breakthrough Reggae Artist of 2018 at the 2019 Jamaica Reggae Industry Awards, and was crowned Miss Teen Jamaica in 2004 and was second runner-up in the 2004 Miss Caribbean Talented Teen and the 2005 Miss Teen World pageants in St. Kitts and Trinidad and Tobago respectively.

Touted as one of the top rising female artists in Caribbean music, Naomi has a musical background in piano and acoustic guitar.

Her first release was the song Naked.  Her other songs include Paradise Plum, Honey, One True Love, Climbing and Peace of Mind.

Her most recent song Energy, which was her first release for this year, received a raving, detailed review in the New York Times newspaper, which subsequently added it to their playlist.   The song, which was co-written by Tarrus Riley, was recorded, produced and mixed in Jamaica and completed in April 2019.

Naomi has also performed live in London, Sweden, Switzerland, Belgium, Trinidad, Miami, Toronto, New York, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands and made her debut performance at Reggae Sumfest in Montego Bay in 2018.

In the meantime, Walshy says, among his other plans for the rest of this year, is the production of an Abeng Part II, a follow-up compilation album to Abeng, which was released in June 2019.

Abeng paired some of the biggest names in Afrobeat and Afropop with a slew of Reggae, Dancehall, and soca artistes from the Caribbean.

The 11-track compilation includes No Negative Vibes featuring Alkaline and Nigerian Afrobeat star Runtown, as well as a remix of Walshy Fire’s debut single, Bend Down Pause, featuring Wizkid of Nigeria, Runtown and Machel Montano from Trinidad.

Other artistes featured on ABENG include Nigerians Mr Eazi, Ice Prince, Adekunle Gold, Ketchup, Shizzi and Stonebwoy; from Trinidad, Bunji Garlin and Nailah Blackman; Vanessa Mdee (Tanzania), Timeka Marshall (Guyana); Efya (Ghana); WurlD (United States/Nigeria); and Demarco, Masicka and Christopher Martin representing for Jamaica.

“It was amazing.  It was a great project. I am so glad I did it and I am working on the second one now,” he said.

“Look out for more music.  I am trying to drop 21 songs for 2021.  I am already up to eight so,” he added.
