Dancehall-reggae artist One1Can has retained the services of attorney-at-law Christopher Townsend in the wake of the threat of a lawsuit by Khadine ‘Ms. Kitty’ Hylton’s legal representatives.

”I stand firmly, strongly and resolutely behind every word. I will not equivocate, and no amount of threats about lawsuits is going to censor me or frighten me. I am a student of the laws of libel, slander and defamation,” he said.

“I have retained Christopher Townsend because he is one of the most astute legal minds in our country and I value his legal opinion in these matters.”

One1Can was forced to retain legal representation when Wilkinson Law, Miss Kitty’s attorneys, sought to rebuke the singer, accused him of seeking to advance his promotion agenda for his new song titled VIP Girl and threatened him with legal action.

“The entire story of a date with our client is a total fabrication by you, an attention-seeking gimmick you aimed at attaching yourself to our client’s name, goodwill, popularity, her successful brand and seeking to exploit or gain access to her audience, fans and supporters including her followers (cumulatively, in excess of one million persons) on various social media platforms,” the letter addressed to Wray said.

The letter suggested that the allegations were a “big and outrageous” lie.

“Apparently this big and outrageous lie, is to promote your fledging recording (VIP Girl) and the music video for it,” the attorneys suggested.

Ms. Kitty’s legal representatives said that if the claim were not retracted and an apology issued, then a formal lawsuit would be filed.

However, the entertainer has so far refused to apologize. In fact, he has doubled down on his statements.

One1Can, whose real name is Milton Wray, shot back at what he dubbed a poorly worded and ‘thinly veiled attempt” to silence him.

“I can tell the greatest of Queen’s Counsel that there is not one word that was presented that is even remotely defamatory. Moreover, there are the well-established principles in defamation law of justification and truth, which are absolute defences. All that I said can be corroborated beyond the shadow of a doubt,” he said.

Ms. Kitty’s attorneys further alleged that the broadcaster’s reputation had been damaged, in the estimation of well-thinking members of society, and were deliberately calculated to ruin and harm her reputation, and has caused her “great distress”.
