JayBlem Set To Compete In The Long Jump At Boys Championships Today
Star athlete-turned-deejay JayBlem will compete in the long jump finals today at the National Stadium in Kingston during the 110th staging of the ISSA Boys and Girls Athletics Championship which will run from today to Saturday, May 15.
“I am going all out to represent KC, I am doing this for my school. There will be no spectators because of COVID-19 but that doesn’t bother me because I don’t really like to invite anybody from my family when I compete. My father, Danny English supports me, but mi no allow people to come watch me compete, only one time mi grandmother did forward but mi don’t really allow that…no distractions,” the talented 18 year-old rhyme slinger JayBlem, whose real name is Jaheim Cox, told DancehallMag.
The deejay, who is known for the single, Account, currently attends Kingston College and plays a vital role in KC’s track and field program.
JayBlem will going up against Calabar’s Jordan Turner, the favourite in the event.
“I am just going to do my best, I jumped 7.16 m early in the season, so I am just going to give it my all,” he said.
This year’s staging of the most anticipated track and field event for high school students will see a sharp reduction in participants due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Only 970 athletes representing 80 schools are eligible to compete, a far cry from the 2,700 who competed at the 2019 edition. The competition was abandoned in 2020 because of the pandemic. Kingston College are the defending champions on the boys’ side while Edwin Allen will be defending the trophy on the girls’ side.
JayBlem has distinguished himself as an elite athlete, representing both KC and Jamaica, racking up medals in the disciplines of the Long Jump, Triple Jump, and 4×100 relay. In 2018, Cox took home the bronze medal with a mark of 7.17m in the Triple Jump at the Boys Athletic Championships, and took home gold in the 4×100 relay at the Class 1 Gibson relays in 2020.
In the meantime, JayBlem is pleased with the progress with his latest single, Account, which was produced by JB Productions.
“The video came out in April and the response has been phenomenal so far, 50,000 plus views in a month, the girl dem love the BlemBloss flavour, so the views are climbing,” he said.
The visuals were provided by Dark Moon Cinema. JayBlem’s song is on the playlist at the KC athletes’ camp at the National Stadium, prompting a reaction from his principal because of the swear words in the verses.
“Mi respect mi teachers, mi and everybody good still. My song has been on repeat at the camp and my principal heard it on Sunday and came over to me and advised me to do clean music in the future, so mi respect his advice,” JayBlem said.
The teenager plans to release his debut EP, Most Reputable later this year.
In the past, he has released a number of other singles such as Regular, Burna, Top Freak, all for the JB Productions label to which he recently inked a recording and booking deal.
Born January 28, 2003, JayBlem was raised in Allman Town, he attended Kingston College high school where he distinguished himself as a star athlete, racking up multiple gold medals, certificates and trophies. He started recording professionally at age of 14. His first song was distributed on his own label, Blem Boss Music in 2018.
