Etana “Grateful” For Billboard No. 1 Plaque, Unveils Award For Instagram Fans
Grammy-nominated reggae artist Etana proudly unveiled her latest award on Instagram – the prestigious Billboard No. 1 plaque for her 2014 album I Rise. The 14 track compilation made history at the time of its release, marking the first time in 17 years a Jamaican female reggae artist topped Billboard’s Reggae Albums chart.
In a short IG clip today, Etana is seen unwrapping the plaque as the upful title track plays in the background.
In the caption, the songstress highlighted her fans, her whole team, and humble August Town beginnings that all shaped her journey towards the crowning achievement.
“‘Grateful’ Special thanks goes out to all the musicians, writers, composers, producers on this album”, the Happy Heart singer wrote. “Thanks to all my fans who purchased and streamed the music! Thanks to all my band members who toured with me and promoted this album. #atown #etana #billboard.”
Etana has also received the plaque for her chart-topping, Grammy-nominated suite, 2018’s Reggae Forever. Released on International Women’s Day that year, the independent project distributed by Tad’s Records created even more music history moments. Etana became the first female reggae performer to occupy the Billboard Reggae Chart’s top spot consecutively, as well as the first female in over twenty years to be nominated for the Best Reggae Album Grammy award.
The Gleaner caught up with the acclaimed vocalist, born Shauna McKenzie, who shared that the rising levels of recognition were milestones she’d dreamt of forever.
“I used to see these plaques on TV and decorating the walls in the offices of major labels and wondered when I would ever get one of those,” the singer told The Gleaner. “Having two of my own makes me feel good about the body of work which I have done so far. Coming from where my journey started in August Town and looking back, and realising that your hard work has paid off, it kinda hits different”.
Etana’s latest album Pamoja contains the “fastest-growing songs” of her near 15-year career, including the “dancehall love song” Baby O with Vybz Kartel and Proppa with Afro-dancehall pioneer Stonebwoy. After wowing fans with her chic and sleek glow-up earlier this year, the reggae crooner says she’s also ready to return to the stage, and gushed about her upcoming set at the Spread Love Reggae Festival in North Carolina.
“I can’t wait!” Etand told The Gleaner excitedly. “I have been preparing myself both mentally and physically for this concert. My regular set is an hour and a half long, but we are always prepared to go longer if time allows, and the fans request it.”
Set for May 29th, a week after the How Long singer’s 37th birthday, the show promises outdoor vibes and a conscious lineup, including the likes of Edge Michael, nephew of the Stepping Razor, Peter Tosh.
