Naomi Campbell Reveals She Had Bob Marley Playing The Moment She Became A Mother
Supermodel Naomi Campbell recently welcomed her first child, calling her daughter “a beautiful blessing” when she shared the news on Instagram. The British icon, born to a Jamaican mother, followed up with details about the birth, revealing on her YouTube show, No Filter With Naomi, that she played Bob Marley’s music as her newborn entered the world.
“In one of my most special moments, you know, I just became a mum, I had Bob Marley playing,” the 51-year-old told her guest DJ D-Nice on the May 25 show.
“I mean, that’s my roots! You know, that’s my roots.”
“I love it,” she said.
Though she didn’t divulge the album or specific songs, the significance of music in Campbell’s life and her high regard for the art form has long been on display. Throughout her prolific career, she’s made notable cameos in acclaimed music videos – as King of Pop Michael Jackson’s love interest in In The Closet, and in her runway element with fellow fashionistas in Freedom! 90 by the late British crooner, George Michael.
The one she’s most fond of however goes back to her bubbling childhood, when she appeared in Reggae King Bob Marley’s Is This Love? visuals at just 7 years old.
An assassination attempt at his Hope Road home sent Marley into late 1970’s British exile, where his mellow album Kaya, which includes the lovers rock classic, was recorded. The video, also filmed in Britain, showcases the Reggae star singing and dancing at a children’s party, where lucky Naomi had at least two separate scenes with the legend.
In 2016, Naomi rehashed the moment for British media outlet, the Guardian, still gushing about her special on-screen debut.
“Of all the videos, Bob Marley’s Is This Love was the most exciting. Our family loved reggae,” Campbell began. “I was just seven, and didn’t know what it would involve. I didn’t realise Bob Marley would be standing right next to me, tucking me under a blanket,” she said.
It was nearly forty years later, but she still vividly recalled the Gong’s striking features, down to his tone of voice. “He was the most handsome man, with beautiful bone structure; mellow, too, and soft-spoken, with a strong Jamaican accent, the kind I already knew from home,” Naomi said.
At little under four minutes, Is This Love is a blissful ballad pouring out the most selfless of sentiments – “I wanna love you and treat you right/ I’m willing and able” – a perfect soundtrack for both mother and child, and a full circle moment it seems for Naomi.
Three days after her 51st birthday, the catwalk queen made the announcement on social media and shared a photo of her cradling her daughter’s feet.

“A beautiful little blessing has chosen me to be her mother, So honoured to have this gentle soul in my life there are no words to describe the lifelong bond that I now share with you my angel. There is no greater love,” she captioned the post.
