Amanyea Shares New Runkus-Produced ‘Top Girl’: Watch

Amanyea has been making moves both in the studio and on the dance floor for some time now. The Jamaican choreographer-turned-artist is back again with fresh visuals for Top Girl.   The track is produced by Runkus (Jah9, Protoje) and  gives listeners a first taste of what’s to come on her upcoming debut EP, Still Go’ Dance under Delicious Vinyl Island.

DancehallMag caught up with Amanyea via email to discuss the new music and her musical influences.

How did you first get into music?

Music and Dance are basically married. As long as I’ve been a dancer I have loved music.  I love drumming with my brother Aaron and Listening to Notorious BIG, Beethoven, Sade and Erykah Badu with my other brother Bobby, and Ella Fitzgerald and Third World with Mommy. At 13 I started writing songs but I was way too shy to pursue music or even tell anyone outside of my family.

What inspired the song Top Girl and the overall sound?

Runkus made a dope beat and the beat felt like a mix between twerking and uplifting. A lot would say you can’t do both But I believe TOP GIRL mastered that. We wanted something that you can ‘gwaan bad’ to and also have a positive message about independence and empowerment.

You’re also a dancer. How do singing and dancing influence each other for you?

Dance has definitely influenced how I interpret/hear music. I experience beats differently and usually I start dancing in my mind as soon as I hear a song. Because of that I tend to write my music like I’m choreographing a dance.
I also believe understanding music more has made me a better choreographer. For me, both of them ‘Buzzy” and go hand in hand!

What do you hope people experience when they listen to your music?

I want them to experience something sexy, fresh, fun, relatable and funky. I want them to feel empowered, heard and find something of themselves in at least one of my lyrics. I am releasing a project and I hope both women and men can feel ALLLL OF THAT!
