Beenie Man’s Daughter Ashley-Jade Embraces Her Bisexuality For Pride Month
Ashley-Jade Davis, the daughter of Dancehall titan Beenie Man, celebrated pride month this year and revealed herself as an official member of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community.
Ashley, 25, a budding singer and registered nurse based in Snellville, Georgia openly embraced her bisexuality in a recent Instagram post this week.
She unapologetically captioned the share, “For those of you who were not aware, I’m BISEXUAL,” and went on to give her 2.8k followers an account of when she realized that she was ‘different’.
“I realized I was a little different from the typical Jamaican girl pitney when I couldn’t wait to head to the locker rooms just so I could watch the girls change. It’s something I had to hide around my family and some friends as well. Today, I embrace who I am. I wouldn’t change a thing,” she wrote and ended with the hashtag, #happypridemonth.
As the daughter of King Beenie Man, who was an outspoken anti-homosexual artist during the peak of his career in the mid-90s and onward in the 2000s, the news of Ashley’s bi-sexuality may come as a surprise to many.
However, in 2011, the Who Am I deejay issued a public apology to the LGBTQ community for his homophobic lyrics, citing his personal evolution.
“I have nothing against no one. I respect each and every human being, regardless of which race or creed, regardless of which religious belief you believe in, and regardless of which sexual preference you are, including gay and lesbian people,” he said in a video release at the time.
“Do not fight against me for a song that I sang 20 years ago,” he said. “I was a kid. Now I know that people live in the world that live their life differently than the way I live my life.”
The Grammy award-winning deejay, whose real name is Moses Davis, may have been responsible for bringing awareness to Ashley’s coming out. In simply toasting a few of his 12 kids on his IG Stories, Beenie tagged Ashley – an unusual face considering his more popular offsprings like Desha Ravers, Crystal Davis, Marco Dean, and even baby Xiah, and wrote, “Look at my beautiful daughter… they grow up so fast.”
Ashley later reposted her dad’s Story and followed it up with another post, letting people know that she’s happy and living her best life.
“My daddy rich. My mama holds me down. My man fine ASF & having my bank account on hefty. The people I consider my friends got my loyalty til the end. Life is good, ” she wrote.
As for her music career, the self-proclaimed “Dancehall Princess” as she has dubbed herself, made her recording debut in 2017 with her father on a track called Super Dad.
She has been known to frequent the stage with the King of Dancehall from as little as 10 years old. Though she has embarked on a career in nursing, she still dabbles in music with Beenie playing a pivotal figure in her artist development.
