Popcaan Congratulates Fellow St. Thomas-Born Star Hansle Parchment After Stunning Victory At Olympics
Track and Field athlete Hansle Parchment gave his Jamaican compatriots a happy surprise during the 110 metre hurdles finals, at the recently concluded Tokyo Olympics.
In an Instagram post on August 9, Dancehall star Popcaan congratulated the St. Thomas-born Parchment after he upset the favorite — American Grant Holloway — to win the Gold medal in the event. Popcaan, who also hails from the rural eastern parish of St. Thomas, wrote in his caption, “Respect youth ST Thomas full a ⭐️ them fi know!!!👏👏✊”
Also in the comments were Grung Lord, Bounty Killer rhyming his congratulations “Stars R’us and bars R’nuff congrats to the young champ🥂🍾” and the reigning Miss World, Toni-Ann Singh, who also hails from St. Thomas. “Chuh!🔥🔥,” she wrote, in celebration of Parchment’s victory.
Hansle Parchment, who ran 13.05 seconds, blazed past Holloway, who walked away with the silver medal. No doubt Parchment’s victory was one of the biggest upsets at the Tokyo Olympics and he was not the only Jamaican to grace the podium for the 110 metre hurdles. Jamaican, Ronald Levy, ran 13.10 seconds to secure his bronze medal.
Parchment’s time in Tokyo was one for the memory books when he posted a video in gratitude to the Tokyo Olympic volunteer who helped him on his way back to the semi-finals when he had boarded the wrong bus.
The Japanese volunteer, Tijana Stojkovic, gave Parchment enough money to take a taxi back to the stadium in time for his race. As a show of appreciation, Parchment gifted the volunteer a Jamaican branded track shirt, thanked her for her benevolent act, stating that she was instrumental to his victory and repaid her.
The Good Samaritan has since been invited to Jamaica by the island’s Government, according to the Gleaner.
Upon his return, Parchment greeted the people of St. Thomas with a celebratory motorcade through Morant Bay which ended with a medal celebration at his alma mater, Morant Bay High School.
The Unruly Boss, Popcaan, though not on the island is currently working on his fifth studio album.
