Shenseea Says ‘The Sidechick Song’ Was Inspired By A True Story
It was just over a year ago that Dancehall starlet Shenseea released her controversial smash hit The Sidechick Song. Speculations immediately followed regarding what motivated the song but as soon as they came, they faded just as quickly. Now Shenseea has revealed that it was actually inspired by a true story.
In an interview with Taste Radio’s Yulissa Delgado, the Blessed singer casually admitted that she “fell into a situation” rather than knowingly put herself there when she once became a side chick.
A friend had introduced Delgado to the song some time ago when she was going through a “messy situation”, she said. The radio host then spun the question on Shenseea, “Was it [the song] relatable to your life at that moment or no?”
“Actually it was”, Shenseea responded but pointed out that it wasn’t her style. “I don’t stand for stuff like that, I mean there is nothing wrong with women who choose that for themselves but it’s just not my type of thing,” she continued.
Having found herself in a love triangle at the time, a then 22-year-old Shenseea was inspired to release a track about exactly that. “Because I fell into that situation, I thought, yo I know a lot of women must be going through this so what’s going to stop me from talking about it. I mean I found myself in this situation, I need to put it out there,” she said.
In March 2020, The Sidechick Song was released with an accompanying music video directed by herself, RD Studios, and Ruptiondiboss where Shenseea played the role of the ‘other woman’.
The video shows she was left behind at a vacation villa where she spent a romantic weekend with her very married beau. Shenseea discovers his wallet in the bed and sees a pic of his wife, then gets flooded with feelings about duplicitous lifestyle.
“Make mi tell uno a likkle story, mi have a man weh have a woman/ This a the original sidechick song, mi up inna mi feelings fi a next gyal man. Mi know it wrong but it neva plan, normally mi a wife mi no hold sidechick position,” the lyrics say.
The Sidechick Song became a massive hit, and one of Shenseea’s best-streamed singles to date, which now sits at over 20 million views on YouTube.
Since the start of her career in 2016, the Dancehall songstress has been very low key about her personal life, often saying that she’s single and prefers to keep things that way. She revealed to Delgado that even though she was once a side chick, she doesn’t ever plan on getting in a situation like that again.
“You can’t pick and choose who you really got feelings for, that’s just it. But you can love yourself first,” she said.
