American track and field star Sha’Carri Richardson surprised some Jamaican critics this week when she revealed she’s a fan of some of the island’s music and when she attended the 2021 Met Gala in an outfit by a Jamaican-born designer.

The 21-year-old Texas-bred athlete may have been the ire of many after her sassy comments towards Jamaicans sprint sensations, Elaine Thompson-Herah, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, and Shericka Jackson, but she could have possibly redeemed herself with these latest developments.

Over the weekend, Sha’Carri shared an Instagram post with her mystery partner as they vibed to the Feelings (Remix) by Dancehall artists D’yani and Jada Kingdom. She also went on further to quote some of the lyrics in her caption: “It’s obvious that I’m in love with you🥰.”

The song’s official audio, released on May 8, has attracted 3.8 million views on YouTube, while the official video, released on July 28, has amassed 2.2 million views.

Feelings was inspired by love and the impact it has people,” D’Yani said on the song’s inspiration. “With that being said we all want to experience the ‘ideal love’ and this song evoked that feeling. Very relatable, just like anyone I aim to experience this kind of love.”

Meanwhile, on Monday, Richardson appeared at the 2021 Met Gala with British F1 legend, Lewis Hamilton looking fabulous on the red carpet wearing a creation from Jamaican-born designer Edvin Thompson.

The Kingston-born fashion designer, who is now based in the United States is the creative behind the fashion brand Theophilio that styled Sha’Carri’s fierce ensemble and who she chose to represent at her big debut at one of the most prestigious fashion galas.

She wore Theophilio’s red and orange corset-style top with a black fringe skirt and paired the look with thigh-high strappy stilettos. Richardson kept her make-up and hair subtle and simple yet bold. She also accessorized with a black leather wristband and a black choker.

The young track star spoke about how she felt walking the carpet at the Met Gala for the first time wearing Thompson’s design.

“I feel delicious! I feel like Cinderella,” she shared with a laugh.

According to Richardson, her look was inspired by the Phoenix, which she identifies with. She wants to show the world how she rose from her lowest to reach the top. She loves the color red as it signifies fire, which she brings on and off the field.

“Just showing the world that no matter what you may see at the mud or the ashes, you can always rise up,” she said. “The red is fire, and always ablaze.”

The Jamaican, ‘Theophilio’ designer, Edvin Thompson was one of the selected few to attend the gala with Lewis Hamilton in his mission to highlight emerging Black talents.

Hamilton told Vogue that he wanted to create a space for up-and-coming Black designers, and with the support of the event’s cochair, Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, the Met was the perfect opportunity to do so.

The 36-year-old race car driver, who launched his foundation Mission 44 to champion fairness and inclusion, attended the gala with designers Edvin Thompson along with Kenneth Nicholson, and Jason Rembert of Aliette.

“I wanted to create a table around supporting and celebrating up-and-coming young Black designers, and we’re living in a time where diversity and inclusion is so important,” Hamilton said.

“Young designers don’t have the same opportunities, and so that’s really why I wanted to support young up-and-coming talent and the Met is the biggest fashion event of the year,” he added.

The seven-time Formula One World Champion wore a look from Nicholson and praised the young designer for his “truly inspiring” craftsmanship in menswear.
