Jamaica, Caribbean ‘Show Out’ For Lil Nas X’s ‘Montero’
Lil Nas X’s debut album Montero is reportedly the No. 1 album on Apple Music in 80 countries around the world. The American rapper, who rose to prominence with the 2019 hit song Old Town Road , has since put his sexuality on the front-burner of his musical projects after he came out as gay that year.
According to HITS Daily Double , Montero is forecasted to sell between 130,000 to 140,000 total units during its first week, including 17,000 to 20,000 in pure album sales in the US alone. However, the 17 track effort, released by Columbia Records last Friday, has also caught many by surprise after doing well in Jamaica and other Caribbean countries.
One Tweet documenting the album’s No. 1 position on Apple Music in Jamaica, received a flood of comments. “In which Jamaica? Jamaica land we love?” one Jamaican asked.
Other Jamaicans chimed in with: “Ain’t gonna lie been bopping to some these songs on the album,” and “Why is everyone surprised about Jamaica? The 90s were over 20 years ago. Jamaica is an all inclusive resort now”.
MszRockstar tweeted, “Thats right” in approval, while iDavey added “JAMAICA! Baby, that’s a flex.”
“The Caribbean really showing out for this album. I truly do hope it’s comforting for those struggling with their identity,” commented one user from Dominica.

Montero has no Jamaican guest appearances but it did feature Jack Harlow on Industry Baby, Doja Cat on Scoop, Elton John on One Of Me, Megan Thee Stallion on Dolla Sign Slime, and Miley Cyrus on Am I Dreaming.
The success of the album on the island comes after Dancehall selector and producer Foota Hype took to his Instagram Live to question the motive of local entertainment shows in featuring Lil Nas X’s music video Industry Baby which was on the island’s YouTube charts weeks ago.
Foota expressed his discomfort about the video’s depiction of a nude Nas X along with other seemingly nude dancers in the background.
“How dat reach innah out top ten trending song..?” he said. “Me cyah see certain things and keep quiet…you a tell me say we nuh have ten song innah our diaspora innah our entertainment industry and look weh you put it, you put the song at number 2”.
Producers of one entertainment program, World Music Views, said in a statement that “YouTube charts on World Music Views aired on TVJ and online at worldmusicviews.com are based on music video and audio consumption in the island and other territories for the week. The World Music Views Chart and other Charts aired on the show are not compromised regardless of content of the video.”
