Racquel Jones Says Dancehall Music Sets The Standard For Abuse Against Women
In an attempt to support fellow female artist Spice against the negative backlash she’s been getting from some Dancehall colleagues and fans—after the announcement of her headlining a pride concert in Canada—Racquel Jones, an upcoming artist, has declared that Dancehall music has culturized the abuse of women, gun violence, and has set the tone for the main ills facing our society.
“Wish these dancehall music advocates would have the same energy they have for homosexuality for things like songs that promotes degrading women, gun violence and bloody murder,” Jones lamented via the post made to her Instagram stories.
In the post that tagged Spice, the songwriter states, “Dancehall music by our Dancehall giants is the core basis that sets the standard for men to abuse women in Jamaica! We have a culture built on disrespecting women and each other and Dancehall is the soundtrack for that, we have bigger issues to worry about than Spice performing at a damn pride event you clowns.”
She then further exclaimed that Spice’s critics should learn to respect women and stop killing each other before worrying about “happy people doing whatever they want and loving whomever they want.”
After Spice responded to her long-time colleague Foota Hype and gave a cheeky response to Sizzla, she reposted Racquel’s statement to her stories, echoing all the model had to say.
Since the announcement of Spice’s headlining of Toronto Pride, set for June 2022, dancehall fans and practitioners have had mixed reactions.
