“Afro Queen To Glam Queen,” Davina Bennett Shows Off Her ‘Versatility’ In Little Black Dress

The former Miss Jamaica Universe Davina Bennett, who executed an excellent presentation of herself and of her culture onstage at Miss UniversE in Las Vegas in 2017, has ditched her usual “Afro Queen” hairstyle for a “Glam Queen” look with a Marilyn Monroe-inspired pin curl hairstyle.

In a post on her Instagram yesterday, the beauty queen looked poised in the black body-hugging, ruched tube “little black dress” from Soignee by Shanacole—which she paired with strappy black stilettoes and dazzling earrings.

However, the Clarendon native’s appearance at the Miss Universe pageant was more than just about her physical beauty.  She had represented a much wider political statement as she stood out of the pack with her afro and her ostentatious yellow dress with many believing she should have walked away with the crown.  Bennett became a voice of Jamaica on the international stage when she greeted the audience by saying “Wah gwaan, Las Vegas,” in an unmistakable Jamaican accent.

At the time, there were several tweets and Facebook posts that speculated that she was the second runner-up in the Miss Universe competition that year because she wore an afro.

On the night of the competition in Las Vegas, Miss South Africa was crowned then after the show ended and the cameras were off, Davina was asked to come back out for a standing ovation by the audience and a royal bow by the host, Steve Harvey.

Early reactions from her post on Instagram suggest that she could re-enter the competition and win this time.

As for those wondering whether Davina was still rocking her natural hair, she answered the question posed by fashion designer Keneea Linton George: “is that a silk press” with a “yes”.

Earlier this year, Bennett appeared as the leading lady on several of the music videos from Colombian Reggaeton singer Maluma’s 7 Días en Jamaica, (7 Days in Jamaica) EP.
