Anthony B Says Backlash Over Scrambled Eggs In ‘Pretty Girls’ Video Was Expected
Reggae singer Anthony B says the backlash over the music video for his song Pretty Girls was expected.
Fans of the Original Fireman were left disgruntled after the Rastafarian artist was seen being served scrambled eggs for breakfast, by his love interest in the song’s music video, which has so far garnered more than 136,000 views since being released on September 11.
The Watch What You Eat artist was rebuked for apparently flouting Rastafarian principles, under which its members are mandated to refrain from strong drinks and all flesh foods. Some commenters said they were ‘burning fire’ on him, as eating eggs was “chicken abortion”, that “Ital is Vital” and that Rastas were to eat only plant-based foods.
When DancehallMag reached out to the Trelawny native for a response on the concerning statements by his fans, he explained: “That’s to make dem talk. They don’t pay attention to what we say if we don’t give dem something to talk!!!!”
“Now you see this is the biggest talking point of the #prettygirls video as we expected it to be!!” he added.
When asked whether he ate the eggs, Anthony B teased, “That’s the answer you’re all going to wait for.”
However, the issue has fuelled a torrent of criticism from the entertainer’s fans.
“I was looking for a plate of Fruits coming out of the Kitchen; not eggs,” one female follower said.
“Wtf anthony b… EGG..!!! No man rasta ya cant do that.. here in the Bahamas we trim rasta for them type darkness.. but we still a rate u 4 ya good works.. but should not put it pon video to make rasta people look bad.. ya wrong for that brother,” Alexi Sawyer declared in expressing disappointment.
“Rasta nah eat eggs, these bredren dem rich so they don’t want to eat vegetables,” Maya Kaliati said, in explaining why Anthony B was being served poultry.
Others said they could not fathom how food from animals, which Rasta doctrine frowns upon, was being featured in a video as being served to a Rastafarian. “Nice vibes, but Rasta bun out dairy products long time now, dash a 🔥 on scrambled eggs 🔥,” Natty Dread pointed out.
“Rasta a eat egg 🔥🔥🔥 everyday the so call rasta dem just a show dem true self, big up urself still DJ atleast you stop hide u ting,” zabir_icomn complained.
There were a few persons who came to Anthony B’s defense, though, pointing out that even though he was served the eggs, he was not seen eating it on camera, even though the camera shows him taking a knife and fork to cut the eggs.
“No Egg was eaten in the video. Rasta a entertainer. Always will please the massive. Big up to Anthony B for being a true entertainer,” Music Production said, while Joshua Hibbert affirmed: “Everyone kno 🔥man nuh eat dat egg, suh all a unnu weh a chat switch off.”
Anthony B, whose real name is Keith Blair, was also upbraided, by Rastafarian fans in particular, for the references to himself as being “ugly”, in the lines in the chorus: “Yes mi ugly, but a pretty girls mi like”.
“Self-loathing rubbish. What kinda BS is this? Like seriously,” prester_john declared in response to the lyrical content.
“You are not promoting self love when you said that you are ugly but a pretty girl you like. Woman on a whole is beautiful. Jah make no one ugly. Anthony B shape up your lyrics don’t sound good. No one told us black was beautiful…,” Kimberlee Ann stated, quoting Chronixx’s Black is Beautiful in her last sentence.
