Popcaan Gets Grimey On New Song ‘El Gringo’: Watch

Living up to his Unruly Boss title, Popcaan chose the day dubbed ‘Boxing’ Day to drop his latest gunplay anthem, El Gringo. Clocking in at just over four minutes, the track fires off at the detractors who aren’t in his caliber and have clearly earned his wrath. Flexing his weapons, wealth and “war budget”, The ‘Killy’ King schools the nameless haters and offenders in his strapped-and-ready, streetwise ways.

El Gringo picks up where another of Poppy’s gritty Spanish lingo hits, El Chapo, left off. Released four years ago, the previous video (currently at 25M YouTube views) saw the Risky deejay living it up like Scarface himself – rocking full white while puffing on a cigar in a cozy mansion. This time around, however, Popcaan takes it to the streets, proving he’s just as menacing in a dark lane late at night with his crew.

Produced by Dansky Records (Rolling Calf – Chronic Law, Air Force 1 – Vybz Kartel) and Attomatic Records (Stature – Masicka, 7 Fall Many Rise – Rygin King), El Gringo’s gentle beat provides ample room for Popcaan’s loud, lethal rhymes and vivid threats.

“Flatbush full a power like Karl Malone/ Whole day, whole night every killy ah roam/ Shallow grave we ah give dem, no coffin, no wreath/ Turn on the Draco, put it pon repeat,” he spits on the track.

The Kreative Klique (Chronic Law – Nuh Tell Me Nuttn/ Good Inna Mi Heart) directed clip brings a slew of special effects to help convey the song’s single aim: “send dem a funeral home.”

Like the real El Chapo, Popcaan makes it known he’s elevated to top gangster levels, with the long rifles and Louis Vuitton gear to prove it. El Gringo arrives after a triumphant year of globetrotting for the St. Thomas native, from London to Ghana and in between, and is possibly a hint he’s back to rule the airwaves on home turf. Either way, the song’s timing is no doubt strategic; Popcaan, who kicked off 2021 with a track called Relevant, is already guaranteed to be trending when 2022 arrives.
