Spragga Benz ‘Needles’ Minister Tufton’s Agenda With ‘Vaccinated’ Song
Dancehall star Spragga Benz has clarified the intent of his latest single, Vaccinated, suggesting that he’s not discouraging persons to take the jab.
“My main reason for doing the song is to bring out the truth. They have been telling us over and over that the vaccine is 100 per cent safe and this is not the case, based on my research,” he told the Jamaica Observer yesterday.
The Jamaica Observer reported that Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton disapproved of the song, saying: “it flies in the face of the science and unfortunately discourages the most important response to the virus threat.”
Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton has expressed concern about Jamaica’s low vaccination rate amid the detection of the Omicron variant in a traveler from the island. Last year, he bemoaned the fact that vaccine hesitancy of Jamaicans has contributed to a low vaccination rate among its population, with an anemic 20.4 per cent of the population being fully vaccinated. The Ministry said that 25.9 percent of the population had been given at least one dose of vaccine.
In the Caribbean, only Haiti has a lower vaccination rate than Jamaica.
However, Spragga Benz has questioned the efficacy of the current slate of vaccines.
“When I was a child and took vaccine, for say measles, we were not expected to have measles again. Many professionals in the medical field have doubts about the vaccine. And, here in Jamaica, as in other places we have been made to believe that once we vaccinate, we are cured,” Spragga Benz intoned passionately to the Jamaica Observer.
“Not so, we were later told we still have to wear mask, sanitise, and keep out distance. Not to take the vaccine is my personal choice,” he continued.
Vaccinated, recorded early October 2021 by Cassette Jones, is yet to be released. The Badman Anthem singer made a post on his Instagram account earlier this week singing the lyrics of the song in a studio setting.
“The truth can be harsh and offensive sometimes still it’s the truth. We sympathize with all those who have experienced negatively. Be safe out there and put Jah first,” he said.
