Fans Call Out Shenseea For “Dumb, Stupid” Comments
Trinidad and Tobago nationals have taken Shenseea to task for what they say was her supercilious categorization of Caribbean fans who questioned whether she had gotten permission from Soca artist Denise Belfon to sample the hook of Work for her Lick collab with Megan Thee Stallion.
In an Instagram Live session, which has been circulating widely on social media, Shenseea, in a terse response, had declared that she was clearing the air and proceeded to rebuke those who accused her of pirating the 1998 track. It came just ahead of Belfon’s own declaration that everything was above-board with the Shenseea-Megan sample of her song.
“This is why some Americans don’t even f-k with Caribbean people. You all be acting stupid as shit! And that’s just the fact! Somma you all dumb as shit!” Shenseea had declared.
“Right, why would we end up use a sample from somebody else’s song that was done in 2006 or five and not clear the song? Like how does that even make sense bro? Like, before you guys like look at the bigger picture and be like ‘Yo, Shenseea is repping for Caribbean…’ y’all trying to say I stole somebaddy song. Stop f-kin with me! Cause that’s so stupid!” she added.
Declaring, in American orthoepy that she was unbothered, the Run Run artist said that she wanted to clear the air, as she did not want people to erroneously believe that she had pirated the line from the song.
“And Megan is on the song. Why would we risk being sued? And it’s not something that is bothering me; it’s because I know that people will run with this narrative. And I’m not going to do it. So I am about to start clearing sh_t up from early. Cause normally I would be avoiding sh_t, but I’m not goin to do it this year. If I see the need to answer, or you all tryin to ruin my reputation or some shit, it’s not gonna happen. I’m not gonna do it with you all; not this year baby,” she said.
“Normally I hold my tongue caw I don’t give a sh_t; normally I hold my tongue caw I don’t care, but come on when we gonna stop dis shit? It’s really just ignorance for real. Really just ignorance. An guess wha? Mi nuh care who waan try come afta mi caw guess wha: five year now mi inna di industry. Mi back broad, as you can see, I have a very broad back. Mi nuh give a shit!” she added.

But over on Twitter, where Shenseea has been trending since Thursday night, many of her Caribbean fans expressed disappointment with her utterances even as they mocked the American accent in which the Jamaican spoke in the video.
“Shenseea could have addressed the situation without calling West Indians dumb in her American accent,” one user jeered, while another added: “lmao did Shenseea call u Caribbeans dumb in an american accent???”
“You were very disrespectful and unprofessional. And stop referring to “you caribbean ppl “like you is a Yankee or you not from the Caribbean,” another man ordered.
Others said that the Mona High School old girl’s response was uncalled for.
“How can anyone excuse what Shenseea said!? So many artists have used samples without clearance only to be sued later. People asked a question cause that shit happens often. You can’t clarify that without calling your people dumb and stupid??? Shit is inexcusable,” one user maintained.
Martino added: “No f_cking excuse! While people don’t need to be unnecessarily rude, she should have handled the criticism like a professional, not a new coolie. Pun intended!”
AioliNagato said that he was particularly disturbed about the generalization of West Indians by Shenseea, as it was the people of the region who had helped to propel her career, and not Americans.
“Shenseea is ONLY popular because West Indian people have been fans of hers for years. You drop one lil freestyle and Americans know your name in 2021 ONLY… Regardless you don’t make a blanket statement about an entire group of people whilst uplifting Americans. You can clarify sh_t without doing that,” he said.
One follower Glowja Cat came to Shenseea’s defense, pointing out that it was the followers who were rude to her first.
“Her reaction aside, many people weren’t asking. They were literally dragging her for stealing the sample. They came to her aggressive so you get what you give,” she argued.
However, over on Trini Bakkhanal’s Facebook page, where the comments were just as caustic, some users argued that Shenseea’s response was trifling as she had not been accused of stealing the soca song.
“No one said she stole the song, people were just curious to know if she got cleared and some were quite happy for the original singer….so this attitude wasn’t necessary! Distasteful to say the least!” one commenter said.
“Ok so you got permission. You didn’t have to clear the air like that. It “we” the same Caribbean ppl hv you where you are. We supported you from the start. I don’t hear artists who are much bigger than you “ The Americans“ behave in that manner. You just looking for air time. Steupsss!!!” another added.
