While Shenseea’s Megan Thee Stallion-assisted Lick caused quite a stir amongst fans and fellow Dancehall entertainers, the saucy collab failed to chart on the Billboard Hot 100.

Released by Rich Immigrants/Interscope Records on January 21, and co-produced by Canadian hitmaker Murda Beatz, Lick samples the beat and lyrics of Trinidadian Denise Belfon’s Work (1998). Belfon had lauded Shenseea and Megan for sampling the track, and had also wished them well with high hopes of the new song opening on the Billboard Charts.

Unfortunately, even with a salacious candy-colored video, ramped up promotion with the $20,000 USD challenge, and Murda Beatz and Megan’s impressive track records of Billboard hits, Lick has failed to chart on the coveted Hot 100 after its first week of release.

According to numbers from MRC Data, provided to DancehallMag, the song received 4 million in on-demand audio and video streams in the United States during its first week.  This gave Lick a debut at No. 20 on the Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100, which lists the top songs in the United States that have not yet charted on the main Billboard Hot 100.

The song also debuted No. 23 on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales and No. 14 on the Rap Digital Song Sales chart.

In Jamaica, Lick is No. 1 on the World Music Views YouTube chart.  The song is the second-biggest debut on the chart, surpassing 800,000 streams from the island. The record was set by Lighter by Tarrus Riley and Shenseea which debuted in 2020, with just over 1 million local YouTube streams.

Lick also made its entry on the Spotify Global Weekly Hip Hop Chart at No. 122. Shenseea is the first Jamaican-born female dancehall artist to make a debut on the chart as a lead artist.

Currently, Lick stands at over 5.6 million views on YouTube.

The song was also co-produced by Joseph L’Étranger and BoogzDaBeast.  The credited writers include Shenseea and Megan along with Jahmal Gwin, Jeremy McIntyre, Lance Shipp, Nathalia Marshall, Rachael Kennedy, Romika Faniel, Shane Lindstrom, and Tobias Wincorn.

Megan Thee Stallion has had a total of 22 songs on the Billboard Hot 100, with two being No. 1 hits, namely Savage and WAP by Cardi B which stayed No. 1 for four weeks.  Meanwhile, Shenseea—the first woman from Jamaica to have charted in 17 years—had made her debut with her features on Kanye West’s acclaimed Donda album with OK OK Pt. 2 landing at No. 12 and Pure Souls at No. 52.

Shenseea’s contribution to West’s album had earned her a Grammy nomination for Album Of The Year at the upcoming 64th Annual Awards.

Expectations are still high for Shenseea’s debut album, Alpha.

On Monday, Billboard Magazine named the Blessed singer as one of their 15 Hip-Hop & R&B Artists to Watch in 2022. She is expected to release another single before the album’s March 11 release date.
