Bob Marley’s Daughter Cedella Says He Would Have Been A Ganja Farmer If Alive
Bob Marley’s firstborn biological daughter Cedella Marley said that if her father were alive today, he would be a marijuana farmer. The author’s statement came while attending the Saatchi Gallery’s Bob Marley One Love Experience in London recently.
“He would be getting up to all sorts of trouble. He’d be a ganja farmer,” she shared with MailOnline. “I mean, I’m just thinking especially in the UK. Nobody’s farming the herb. It’s the healing of a nation and, since he spent so much time here, I don’t know where he got it but I would like to make it legal. I should start a movement.”
The fashion designer also told the Mail that if needs be she is ready to take the matter up in parliament.
Cedella also shared that though she wasn’t able to actually go inside, she visited 42 Oakley Street in Chelsea—the address where he and his band the Wailers lived in 1977—during her current trip to London. Marley was honored with an English Heritage blue plaque at the location.
“Well I couldn’t get inside but it was good to just touch the plaque and see where he lived for over a year. It was good to be there, good to see it.”
The singer also revealed that her late father’s 1967 single, Nice Time was written for her and says she listens to the track for motivation up to this day. “He had many children but that song he did for his firstborn. It’s almost like whenever I feel kind of funny, whenever I get a bad vibe, I listen to it and it motivates me because he was so grateful to have me and I’m so grateful to have him,” the 54-year-old mother of two said.
The One Love Experience, at London’s Saatchi Gallery, was opened by Cedella and her son Saiyan. The exhibition will continue for the next 10 weeks, then will move on to a multi-city tour, featuring memorabilia, photographs, and personal items. These range from the original handwritten lyrics of Turn Your Lights Down Low to shoes Marley wore in the 1970s.
In another interview, Cedella’s son Saiyan said of his grandfather: “London must have been special to Marley as he chose here to get away after an assassination attempt. I feel like every year I just learn something new about him.”
In 1945, Bob Marley was born in rural Jamaica Nine Mile, he became a global superstar with hits such as “No Woman, No Cry” and “One Love.”
He died of melanoma cancer in 1981 at 36 years old.
His album with the Wailers, Legend: Best Of Bob Marley is the best-selling reggae album of all time.
